MEXICANS IN EUROPE

Mexican soccer stars suffer in Europe

Soccer has a strange way of touching various groups in the same way, and Europe proved a weekend to forget for the likes of Ochoa and Álvarez.

Mexican footballers are increasingly losing ground in Europe, and this past weekend they did not have their best performances. Guillermo Ochoa is struggling in Italy on a team level, while Edson Álvarez failed to deliver the goods in the heavy defeat against Arsenal in the English Premier League. We cast an eye over some of the performances on the Old Continent.

Ochoa and Salernitana sinking in Serie A

Guillermo Ochoa and Salernitana are facing relegation in Serie A. The team from Salerno succumbed to Empoli, marking their fifteenth defeat of the season, further plummeting them in the Calcio standings. ‘Memo’s’ team is currently at the bottom of the league table with 13 points, having secured only two victories, seven draws, and 15 losses. Their last triumph dates back to 30 December against Hellas Verona.

The string of poor results led to Filipo Inzaghi’s dismissal, and now Fabio Liverani will attempt to salvage the situation. Salernitana is six points away from safety positions, leaving a faint glimmer of hope.

Edson and his worst game in the Premier League

The midfielder perhaps had his worst game since joining West Ham. The ‘Hammers’ were overwhelmed by Arsenal in the Sunday fixture of the Premier League. With Jaime Lozano watching from the stands, Edson failed to deliver his best performance. He missed two decent opportunities, won only four duels on the pitch, and lost possession six times.

Consequently, his coach decided to substitute him at halftime, making way for Kalvin Phillips. The London-based team currently sits in a respectable eighth position with 36 points.

Injuries to Santiago Giménez and Raúl Jiménez

Both Mexican forwards are currently injured. Just before the match against Sparta Rotterdam, Feyenoord announced that Santiago Giménez would miss the game due to an undisclosed injury. Meanwhile, Raúl Jiménez is also sidelined due to hamstring discomfort, which prevented him from playing against Fulham over the weekend. His recovery is estimated to take at least a few weeks.
