Mexico looks to snatch 2027 Gold Cup hosting duties from the US

The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) is working to bring the Gold Cup back to Mexico in 2027, seeking to host a portion of CONCACAF’s flagship tournament for the first time in more than two decades.

The country last hosted Gold Cup matches in 2003, when Mexico co-hosted the tournament alongside the United States—a campaign that ended with El Tri securing a 1-0 victory over Brazil in the final. Since then, CONCACAF has consistently favored the U.S. market to host the tournament, leveraging its attendance draw and large expatriate populations from participating nations living in the country.

Under the proposal put forward by the FMF, the newly renovated Estadio Banorte (Estadio Azteca) would serve as Mexico’s primary venue. However, the bid features a joint-hosting format with the U.S., meaning only a selection of matches would take place on Mexican soil.

Mexico’s bid is backed by its strong athletic history. The national team is the reigning Gold Cup champion and holds more titles in the tournament than any other nation in the region, including the United States.

A key factor bolstering Mexico’s candidacy is the momentum generated by hosting the 2026 World Cup. Among the three co-host nations, Mexico stood out for fan engagement, the international reach of its Fan Fests, and the successful staging of 13 matches split across Mexico City, Monterrey, and Guadalajara.

For the Mexican Football Federation, regaining hosting duties for the Gold Cup would represent a major athletic and financial milestone. The tournament serves as a primary revenue stream for CONCACAF, which is why the U.S. has regularly hosted the event in recent years.

CONCACAF has not yet officially designated the host for the 2027 edition. While hosting select matches in Mexico is being actively considered within the organization, no formal decision has been announced.
