Mexico national team’s rivals leaked for international break in September - October: Unofficial venues and dates
Mexico may not have made as deep of a run as they would have liked in the World Cup, but a El Tri’s new era is set to start under Rafa Marquez.
Have you had enough of international soccer over the last couple months, or do you want more? Well, if the World Cup didn’t scratch that itch enough, then you won’t have to wait too long to see your favorite country back in action.
No rest for the weary
After 104 games, 48 teams, 12 group stages, and five knockout rounds in 39 days, Spain were the last team standing thanks to Ferran Torres extra time goal which lifted Spain over Argentina for their second star. Most of the players that participated in the World Cup and that made a deep run are still on vacation before returning to their club sides for what will be an abbreviated preseason and an early start to the league campaigns.
In Mexico, they aren’t waiting for anyone to come back from vacation. In fact, the Apertura started the same week of the World Cup final, and some players from the Mexican national team, like Jesus Gallardo and Erik Lira already started playing with their club teams less than two weeks after Mexico’s loss to England.
By the time the first international break after the World Cup comes, the Liga MX players will be in midseason form. The first break in domestic league play will come at the end of September and early October. Mexico is scheduled for four games over the course of 11 days, with the first match coming on September 26th and the last on October 6th.
Marquez debut date set
The first match will be against Colombian in Baltimore on the 26th of September, which overlaps with a Liga MX weekend full of matches. Three days later El Tri will take on Peru in Red Bull Arena, in New York. Mexico will then renew their rivalry with the US on the 3rd of October from Phoenix, Arizona before their final game of the break, on October 6th against Chile from the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.
This will be our first look at the new look Mexico side that has been inherited by former defender, and legend Rafa Marquez. Marquez was named the new manager after Javier Aguirre’s third stint as national team coach came to an end following Mexico’s loss to England in the round of 16. Marquez served as Aguirre’s right hand man on the bench for the last two years, and now he will take over on the touchline.
Marquez’s debut tops the long list of things we will be waiting to see during this break at the end of September into October. Gilberto Mora was one of the breakout stars of the summer after breaking the record for the youngest Mexican player to ever play in a World Cup match. Julian Quinones was the top scorer for this Mexico side during the tournament and he and Raul Jimenez look to be a big part of Marquez’s plan looking forward. It will be a busy week and a half for El Tri, and we won’t have to wait too long to see them take the pitch again.
