Mexico send a warning to Gold Cup rivals
An emphatic 4-0 win over Honduras in the opening game for ‘El Tri’ has helped fans forget the misery of the recent Nations League loss to the USA.
The Mexican national side brushed the Honduran team side in the 2023 Gold Cup debut with a 4-0 win in Houston and El Tri now top Group B and are in pole position to advance as group winners.
Under the guidance of new interim coach ‘Jimmy’ Lozano, Mexico lead the way and are followed by Haiti who delivered a Gold Cup shock in beating Asian champions Qatar with the Asian side taking the lead in the 20th minute only to fall in the 97th minute as Pierrot bagged maximum points for the Caribbean side.
Qatar and Honduras now prop up Group B with this being the second Gold Cup appearance for the Gulf nation after they managed to reach the semi-final in 2021.
With his Houston double, Luis Romo now leads the top scorer ranking in the championship as El Tri now set their sights on the second game on the tournament as they face Haiti on Thursday, June 29 and close the group stage against Qatar, on Sunday, July 2.
Mexico are looking to bounce back swiftly after their humbling 3-0 loss to the USA last week in the Concacaf Nations League semi-final with the result prompting the sacking of former head coach Diego Cocca. Mexico’s last Gold Cup win came in 2019 when El Tri defeated staunch rivals the United States 1-0 at Soldier Field Chicago with 62,493 spectators in attendance.
