Mexico to play Brazil in June 2024: where, when, who will play
El Tri are on the verge of confirming a game against Brazil as they look to step up their preparations ahead of the Copa América.
Two American giants are set to go head to head once again on the football pitch: Mexico and Brasil are poised to announce a friendly game in June 2024, just a couple of weeks ahead of the two sides competing in the Copa América.
According to information from TNT Sports, the game between the two sides is all but confirmed for one of the FIFA breaks in the middle of next year. TV Azteca also pointed out that Uruguay will take on Mexico around this time as part of the preparations for one of football’s oldest - and greatest - tournaments.
When and where will the game be played?
Given the game has not been officially confirmed and there is still over 6 months to go until it is played, neither a specific date nor a venue have been suggested publicly for the tie. The full details on the event will either be announced with the confirmation of the game or we will simply have to wait and see what decision is made later in the year.
What is Mexico’s recent record against Brazil?
The two sides last played each other back in the 2018 World Cup, which took place in Russia. On that occasion, it was the South Americans who came away with a victory, winning 2-0 thanks to second half goals from Neymar and Roberto Firmino which sentenced Juan Carlos Osorio’s side that included names such as Rafael Márquez, Hugo Ayala and Carlos Salcedo.
Before that, in 2015, the Brazilians won in a friendly game by the same scoreline, with Coutinho and Diego Tardelli scoring. Miguel Herrera was boss of El Tri at this moment in time and his side was made up of players like José de Jesús Corona, Javier Güemez and George Corral.
A year earlier, Mexico avoided defeat against the Seleção as they drew 0-0 in the Group Stage of the 2014 World Cup. On that day, with Herrera at the helm, Mexico battled their way to a point with Oribe Peralta and Giovani dos Santos leading the line.
Jaime Lozano’s curious Brazil link
While Mexico’s record at senior level might not be the best against the 5-time World Champions, at youth level things look different. Mexico beat Brazil in the 2005 u-17 World Cup as well as overcoming them in the final of the 2012 Olympics in London. In 2020, the South American side sought revenge as they beat them on penalties against a Mexico team that was, curiously, managed by none other than Jaime Lozano.
