Ochoa does it again

It's Guillermo Ochoa's fifth World Cup and he keeps producing the goods for Mexico.

Saudi Arabia lead Group C after the first round of games, beating Argentina 2-1 to cause a major upset earlier in the day. Mexico and Poland are behind them with a point apiece after their 0-0 draw.

Lewandowski rues missed opportunity

Poland talisman Lewandowski saw his 58th-minute penalty saved by Ochoa.

Mexico pick up a point in their World Cup opener thanks to Guillermo Ochoa, who guesses correctly to keep Robert Lewandowski's penalty out.

Cash gets forward for Poland and earns his side a corner.

Vega, from outside the area, comes across the ball and it flies high and wide. Glik was quite reluctant to get in the way of that one. 

A win for either side would give them a huge advantage in Group C after Argentina's defeat earlier today. And there is still plenty of time.

It's a yellow for Frankowski, who catches Lozano. That's a fully deserved booking.

Mexico are about to make a couple of changes and one of them will be Wolves striker Raúl Jiménez, who will probably replace Henry Martín.

Poland defend that well.

Poland have not beaten Mexico since 1978, the only time the teams met at a World Cup. And the last time they played each other was in 2017 when Wolves striker Raúl Jiménez scored in a 1-0 win for Mexico.

Lewandowski will be absolutely kicking himself. He has been on fire for Barcelona this season but couldn't give his side the lead in Doha.

His penalty was low and hard but wasn't right in the corner.

Zielinski sends his free too long and it goes out for a goalkick. Ochoa takes it. The Mexico netminder is playing in his fifth World Cup, an absolute legend of Mexican football.

Poland will need a huge improvement this half if they want to win the game. Mexico were dominate in the opening 45' but failed to create many chances.

As things stand in Group C, Saudi Arabia are top after their shock win over Argentina earlier today.

Mexico have just about edged it. Despite having the majority of the ball, they have failed to really test Szczesny in the Poland goal.

Mexico get more joy down the right. Lozano whips it into the back post, where Aston Villa's Matty Cash heads it away.

There will be two minutes added on. There hasn't been a whole pile of action.

Szczesny saves well from Sanchez. Mexico have a corner on the right.

Vega's corner is eventually caught by Szczesny.

Sanchez and Lozano link up well down the right, before the former crosses from the byline. Glik is there to head it away as Szczesny comes off his line just in case.

Lozano fouls Krychowiak. Poland have a free. Lewandowski has barely touched the ball, by the way.

The Mexican fans have some glorious costumes and could probably win the best-dressed fans award. They have also been quite loud inside the stadium today.

As things stand, Saudi Arabia are top of Group C!

Gallardo does well to get a cross in from the left, but it's straight into Szczesny's hands. 

Szczesny's goalkick comes off Herrera's head and its a throw to Poland. It remains 0-0. Poland are happy to play it about at the back. Mexico have looked to get in behind them but have so far failed to break Michniewicz's side down.

Robert Lewandowski is playing his 135th game for Poland today. It's a record for the national team.

Lewandowski is also the top scorer in the squad with 76 goals.

Poland have not beaten Mexico since 1978, the only time the teams met at a World Cup. And so far Mexico are the team that look like scoring.

Sanchez gets a booking for pulling Szymanski back.

Chavez plays a lovely left-footed ball into the box. Szczesny flies off his line before the ball deflects off the keeper and Poland have to clear.

It's an emotional one

The Mexico players have been feeling just how big of an occasion the World Cup is.

It's a high foot from Mexico forward Henry Martin. Poland have a free out. The Club America forward is not happy with that decision.

In the 2018 World Cup, Mexico were knocked out in the round of 16. Tata Martino will be aiming to go one better this time around, to silence all of his critics.

Glik tries to clear a cross from the right but he slices it up into the air. Szczesny comes off his line to claim. Mexico have been the more positive of the two sides in the opening twenty minutes.

Sanchez gets down the right once again but this time finds himself in an offside position. 0-0

This is a crucial fixture for both sides after Argentina's shock defeat to Saudi Arabia earlier today. 

Sanchez flies down the right flank but his touch lets him down and it's possession Poland once again.

Mexico and Poland have played each other nine times, with both teams winning three games each and three ending in draws.

Krychowiak makes a good challenge and Mexico have a corner.

It goes short before eventually being played into the box. Moreno is up highest but can't keep the header down. 0-0

Glik and Montes clash in the air but both will be fine. Glik played for Real Madrid C in his younger days and has been called 'Ramos' from time to time. He's not afraid to pull out of challenges, that's for sure. 

Lewandowski's header comes off a Mexico player and goes out for a corner. Zielinski sends another corner in and there's a nasty clash of heads. 

Martino's side use inverted wingers and overlapping full-backs, with one deeper-lying midfielder in the three. The deep-lying midfielder is the talented Edson Alvarez of Ajax. 

Lozano breaks down the right and whips it across goal with pace. Poland manage to deal with it. An early sign of things to come, perhaps.

Mexico missed out on top spot in the CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers to Canada only by goal difference.

Mexico have set up in a 4-3-3. They like to build through the thirds.

Guillermo Ochoa is a legend of Mexican football and this is his fifth World Cup.

Having played in Europa with clubs like Málaga and Granada, he'll provide a wealth of experience for Tata Martino's side. He's 37 and currently plies his trade with Mexican giants América.

Lewandowski, the danger man

Poland's talisman Robert Lewandowski scored nine goals in the World Cup qualifiers and the Barcelona striker has been in fine form this season, netting 18 times in 19 games in all competitions.

Martino: "Poland clash will be crucial"

It’s no secret that the Mexico vs Poland result will have a huge impact on both teams in Group C.

El Tri’s coach Gerardo Martino admitted that the team will be seeking to improve their previous seven tournament performances which have seen them eliminated in the round of 16 on each occasion.

Mexico have won their opening group game in five of the last six World Cups and they have not lost an opening group clash on the biggest stage since 1994.

“We are expecting to play our three group stage matches the same way. That will depend on the rival’s game plan, too. Tomorrow’s match is going to be crucial for us”, Martino admitted.

Mexico are taking part in their 17th World Cup. It's their eighth in a row, but El Tri have been eliminated in the last-16 at every edition since 1994.
