MLS commissioner confirmed for the next four years
Don Garber will continue in his role as head of MLS.
It’s a busy week for Major League Soccer (MLS). After a long season that began last February, this Saturday will mark the conclusion of the campaign, with either LA Galaxy or NY Red Bulls crowned as the new champions of American soccer.
Amid the anticipation for the MLS Cup final (Saturday December 7, 4:00 p.m. ET / 1:00 p.m. PT.), notable developments continue to emerge across the league. One of the week’s major highlights is the contract renewal of Don Garber, a pivotal figure in the growth of MLS over its three decades of existence.
Garber into the record books
According to the sports business outlet Sportico, Don Garber has signed a four-year extension to remain as MLS Commissioner. The report notes that Garber had been serving without a formal contract following the conclusion of the 2023 season.
However, he finalised the extension during the current campaign, ensuring his tenure as commissioner through the 2027 season. This season will count as the first of his renewed four-year term.
Don Garber has held the position of MLS Commissioner since the 1999 season, making him the second-longest-serving commissioner of a major U.S. sports league. The only league executive with a longer tenure is Gary Bettman, who has led the NHL since 1993—a remarkable 31 years in the role.
Trailing Garber is NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who has served since 2006. Meanwhile, Adam Silver of the NBA and Rob Manfred of MLB have held their respective roles since 2014 and 2015.
