MLS delve into the Liga MX market again: Real Salt Lake set sights on Uruguyan defender

Real Salt Lake continues to scout the Mexican market in search of players who can bring quality and creativity to MLS. Their latest target is Uruguayan defender Juan Manuel Sanabria, who is now in his third year with Atlético de San Luis. According to transfer reporter César Merlo, the 25‑year‑old, whose contract expires in June, could be on his way to the United States soon.

Sanabria moved to Spain at a young age, joining Atlético Madrid before making the jump to Liga MX in 2021 with Atlético de San Luis. He also spent time with Zaragoza. His work ethic, consistency, and professionalism quickly earned him the trust of coaches and the affection of fans.

In the current Clausura 2026, he has already appeared in three matches — all as a starter — scored once against Club América, and played every available minute.

International at youth level

Sanabria has represented Uruguay at multiple youth levels, including the U‑17, U‑20, and U‑23 national teams. In Mexico, he has been a steady performer, and his goal against América at Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes was key in San Luis’ win over André Jardine’s squad.

Whether the move to MLS becomes official in the coming hours remains to be seen, but the league continues strengthening its rosters with talent from Liga MX.

Atlético San Luis will host Chivas this weekend, with the match set for Saturday at Estadio Alfonso Lastras Ramírez. The team has opened the season with one win, one draw, and one loss. Spanish manager Guillermo Abascal is working to lift the club’s form and guide them back into the Liguilla with hopes of competing for the Liga MX title.
