MLS to gain valuable member of Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering Manchester City
Major League Soccer, with the likes of Apple behind it, has already snapped up Lionel Messi, and Austin FC appear to now have an off-field star addition.
After having won the incredible treble of English Premier League, UEFA Champions League and FA Cup, Manchester City will bid farewell to an important cog in their massively successful wheel. And it’s the newly buoyant MLS that will be the beenficiary.
Borrell leaves Man City for MLS
Although not one of Pep Guardiola’s myriad playing stars heading across the Atlantic a la his former student Lionel Messi recently did, but instead his assistant, Rodolfo Borrell, who will head off for an American challenge.
Nothing is yet official but journalist Fabrizio Romano has made a name for himself in getting many of these stories right and calls it an exclusive.
‘Man City’s Rodolfo Borrell set to join AustinFC as Sporting Director following successful 9-year stay with the Citizens & last season treble,’ Romano tweeted. ‘Pep Guardiola’s top assistant and former Global Technical Director will sign multiyear deal.’
Who is Rodolfo Borrell?
Borrell joined the former Barcelona manager’s coaching staff in 2016 and is renowned for having trained some of the greatest footballers to emerge in the world, including the aforementioned Messi, Andrés Iniesta, Césc Fábregas, Kevin de Bruyne, among many others. He is also said to have been a decisive figure in the evolution of Phil Foden.
Interestingly this is not the first time that the MLS has turned to Guardiola’s assistant. In 2020, he was in talks to become DC United’s new man, though the capital team ultimately went with Wayne Rooney.
