Despite much speculation that has existed about a possible union between MLS and Liga MX, a partnership with which would make both competitions into one, the possibility has been completely ruled out by the commissioner of Major League Soccer, Don Garber.

In an interview with El Universal, the commissioner of the North American league ruled out the creation of a new competition that would require the union of both leagues, ensuring that the only contest in which both leagues will share their clubs will be the Leagues Cup, which will debut next summer.

We are seeing the merger with the Leagues Cup. The magic has happened. It is no longer necessary to combine our competitions, when we have everything in a tournament that can well be considered a league (Leagues Cup)”, Don Garber explained in an interview conducted by El Universal.

In this way, MLS and Liga MX will continue independently with their respective competition formats and there will be no creation of a new tournament, despite rumours that it was part of the preparation for the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada in 2026.

The Leagues Cup will provide all the necessary competition

Finally, Don Garber stressed that both MLS and Liga MX will benefit in terms of learning about each other, since the Leagues Cup will be a contest in which both competitions will share knowledge for future plans and with the aim of making the sport grow in both countries.

“I think there is the idea that Mexico needs to learn from MLS, because we are doing things better, but I don’t think that is the reality. Together, we can create dynamics in the Concacaf region where we are both influential,” said the Major League Soccer commissioner.
