MLS star has the “best-selling jersey in any sport” right now
LAFC’s general manager has claimed that Son Heung-min is the global market leader in jersey sales since moving to MLS.
Heung-Min Son’s arrival at LAFC has made an instant impact both on and off the field.
In his debut against the Chicago Fire, the South Korean star won the penalty that secured a draw for Steve Cherundolo’s side. He is expected to become a key piece for one of the strongest teams in the Western Conference, a side that will challenge for MLS Cup once again.
His influence hasn’t stopped at matchday. Around the world, not just in the United States, Son has become a merchandising phenomenon and is currently leading global jersey sales across all sports.
That’s according to LAFC general manager John Thorrington, who told TalkSport that Son is currently outselling every other athlete on the planet.
“This is the second week in a row where we’re not just talking about the top-selling soccer jersey in MLS,” Thorrington said. “It’s the best-selling jersey in any sport in the world right now and I’m talking about Son.”
When TalkSport host Andy Goldstein pressed him on whether Son was really selling more shirts than Lionel Messi or any other sports figure, Thorrington didn’t hesitate: “If you look at the period since he signed with LAFC, he’s sold more jerseys than any other athlete in the world.”
Throughout his stellar decade with Tottenham Hotspur, Son Heung-min was one of the most consistently dangerous forwards in the Premier League. He formed a deadly partnership with Harry Kane, firing the team to the Champions League final in 2019 and ended his time with the team with a Europa League triumph earlier this year.
