37-year-old midfield player Luka Modric seems destined to play for Real Madrid in the 2023/24 season. The Croatian’s current deal expires on 30 June and AS understands that Modric spoke personally with Madrid chief Florentino Pérez to convey his main wish to remain at the Bernabéu for a further 12 months and leave the club in style in 2024. The central midfielder has spent 12 years with side from the Spanish capital and worn the famous shirt 480 times.

Perez welcomed the initiative from the midfielder from Zadar who has also seen lucrative offers forthcoming from clubs in the Saudi Pro League but the player is still anxious to compete at the highest level with the 37-year-old feeling that he still has the required physical capacity to play for the team on the biggest stage.

Modric has discussed the matter with his family and close circle and there is unanimous agreement that the best decision is for the player to pen a further one year extension and call time with Real Madrid at the end of the forthcoming campaign. This season, Modric has already played 44 games, provided six assists and bagged six goals, equaling his best scoring record (2020-21). Real Madrid head coach Ancelotti has already made it clear that he is keen for the current No. 10 to continue as he sees the Croat as a fundamental piece in his team.

Modric is also planning to continue playing with Croatia. This summer they will play the UEFA Nations League Final Four in the Netherlands and will face the host nation in the semifinals. An overall win would see Croatian secure their first ever major title and that may be a factor in Modric’s decision to continue at international level with Euro 2024 just around the corner.
