Mohamed Salah’s lasting legacy at Liverpool: club records and what he still could achieve before Anfield farewell

Salah has done it all and won it all at Liverpool and now it’s time to move on. Where does he rank among the greats and what is left to achieve for the ‘Egyptian King’?

Update:

When Mohamed Salah signed for Liverpool in June 2017, he was a relatively unknown quantity in the eyes of many fans. While he had shown glimpses of talent in the Egyptian and Swiss leagues, he was untested in the Premier League, a competition which is faster, more physical and infinitely more demanding.

He had been unable to carve out a niche for himself during his brief spell under José Mourinho at Chelsea, and while he performed reasonably well while on loan at Fiorentina, he never looked settled and opted to extend his loan elsewhere - in the Italian capital with Roma.

Mo had two decent seasons at Roma - scoring 14 goals in his first season and 15 the following one when the club exercised their option to buy him. Liverpool clearly saw something in the young Egyptian and paid £36.5 million ($42.1 million) to bring him to Anfield.

Salah builds on early promise

Salah was quick to get off the mark in the pre-season, with close-range finishes against Wigan and Leicester but a neat chip against Hertha Berlin demonstrated that he was something special.

After failing to make the mark at Stamford Bridge, Salah flourished at Anfield, where he would go on to become a household name and write his name into club history.

During his nine seasons at Liverpool, Mo has broken numerous records that have stood for many, many years, overtaking the benchmarks set by some of the most legendary players to have worn the red shirt.

In October 2021, he surpassed Steven Gerrard’s club record of 31 goals in the Champions League. And just over a year later, he swiped another Gerrard record - overtaking the ex-skipper’s 41 goals across all European competition by finding the net in the Last 16 tie against Real Madrid. Salah’s current tally stands at 53 - a number he could potentially add to in next month’s quarter final against PSG.

Sir Roger safe in second

Mo is third in the list of Liverpool’s all-time top scorers, having breezed past icons such as Kenny Dalglish, Robbie Fowler and Billy Liddell. He has scored a grand total of 255 for the Reds in 435 appearances. He is 30 goals behind the player in second place, Roger Hunt and it’s practically impossible that Salah will move up the ranking now that he is leaving.

Liverpool have at least 10 games left to play in the current campaign and the only chances Salah has of ending his final season Anfield with silverware is if the team wins the FA Cup or the Champions League. Manchester City and PSG stand in the way of a place in the semi-finals in both competitions.

Salah’s honors

Nevertheless, Salah can be more than satisfied with what he has achieved during his time at Liverpool: collectively he has won every domestic and European title there is to win (bar the Europa League and Conference League). An enviable honors list which includes: two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and EFL Carabao Cup along with the Champions League, European Super Cup and Club World Cup.

Individually, he has won four Premier League Golden Boots, the FIFA Puskás award and was voted PFA Players’ Player of the Year three times, among many other awards.
