Nacho confirms he is staying at Real Madrid
The Spanish centre-back confirmed what was published by AS on June 5: he is staying at Madrid
Nacho Fernández will continue for one more season at Real Madrid. The player himself was the one who confirmed the news in an interview for television station RTVE from the Spanish National Team training camp in Madrid. Nacho has therefore confirmed, officially, the information that AS revealed on June 5 and brings some peace of mind to Real Madrid after the departures of Asensio, Hazard and Mariano, and the not-so-expected exit of Benzema, who packed his bags and flew off to Saudi Arabia.
Nacho has played for Madrid for 22 years, ever since his arrival in 2002 as a youngster. His contract was up in the summer and the player had to make a decision on whether, at 33-years-old, he would accept the renewal of another year from Madrid, or finally go and seek pastures new. Nacho will be the new captain of the club after the departure of Benzema and he is on his way to becoming a One Club Man.
Nacho ‘excited’ to continue at Madrid
“My club and my family go hand in hand. There are always offers from abroad, but I have decided to stay for another year. I am very happy with this decision. I’m really excited to continue at Madrid”, said the centre-back, who will once again be under the orders of Ancelotti and ready to fight for his place in the team that is always up for grabs.
Nacho also spoke about Luka Modric, and the potential clash between Spain and Croatia in the final of the UEFA Nations League: “Luka is always going to make things difficult, I hope we see each other in the final.”
Nacho starting season number 11 at Madrid
He also mentioned Luis de la Fuente, Spain’s current manager, whose job security has been questioned recently: “Here we’re all playing for our futures, not just the coach. We always have to perform in every game. I see the manager with a lot of hope and excitement. We go through an exam every day. Between the young players and the experienced ones, we can achieve our goals.”
Nacho has played in the Madrid first team for 10 seasons, making next year number 11. He has played 319 official games for the club and won 23 trophies, the same number as Luka Modric and Paco Gento: 5 Champions Leagues, 3 LaLiga titles, 2 Copas del Rey, 5 Club World Cups, 4 UEFA Super Cups and 4 Spanish Super Cups.
