Neither Real Madrid nor Liverpool, this is the most successful soccer team in the world

Despite the likes of Madrid, Barça, Bayern, Man City, PSG and Liverpool dominating the current scene, one has to look away from Europe’s big leagues to discover the most successful club.

Neither Real Madrid nor Liverpool, this is the most successful soccer team in the world

Elite football across the European continent is becoming more of a closed shop year-on-year as financial clout plays an ever increasing role in any soccer club’s ability to compete for major silverware.

We’ve seen how investment from nation states (UAE and Qatar) have revived the fortunes of two clubs in Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.

City, who traditionally were perceived as the ‘poor relation’ in Manchester and always a mid-ranking club in England have been transformed since the takeover in 2008. In the 16 years since the UAE investment, the Sky Blues have amassed an impressive 23 major titles which include eight Premier League wins, a Champions League victory along with a FIFA Club World title in 2023.

Similarly PSG have seen a significant increment in success since being taken over in 2011 by Qatar’s QSI. The Parisian giants have won every Ligue 1 title (bar one) since the acquisition along with six French Cups with the Champions League title still eluding the Parc des Princes outfit.

Despite these sides being relative ‘newcomers’ at the top table of Europe’s established elite which includes the likes of Real Madrid, Juventus, Bayern Munich and Liverpool, none of these teams have amassed as many domestic championship wins as Belfast based Linfield.

Most successful team in the world

Even when it comes to the global stage, no other club can boast as many domestic championships as the Belfast ‘Blues’ with their 56 league wins in the Northern Ireland league.

Granted, the Northern Ireland top flight currently ranks as 42nd in Uefa’s coefficient but as they say: ‘you can only beat what’s in front of you'.

Hot on the heels of the side from Ulster are Glasgow giants Rangers and Celtic who have amassed 55 and 54 championship titles respectively.

Uruguay ‘big guns’ Peñarol (52) and Nacional (49) follow closely in the domestic championship wins register.
