New deal or free agency: Vinícius makes major Real Madrid contract decision
The Brazilian has decided to remain at Real Madrid next season no matter what. If he doesn’t extend, he’ll leave on a free transfer.
Vinícius Júnior is staying at Real Madrid next season - no matter what. The winger has already made up his mind. If a new deal doesn’t get done, he’ll play out his current contract and leave on a free if Madrid ultimately decline to make a move. And if an extension is agreed, even better, because his intention has always been to remain at Madrid - the club he loves. Either way, one major unknown has now been settled. Vinícius will suit up for Los Blancos next season regardless of whether the club adds more attacking talent (Michael Olise has been heavily linked, and Madrid have already made a formal bid for Julián Álvarez). And if the club decides not to renew him, he’ll walk away on June 30, 2027, when his deal expires.
Contract talks stall
Talks over a new contract for Vinícius have dragged on without an agreement and without any decisive movement in recent months. With the World Cup looming, negotiations are expected to resume only after the tournament. As time passes, Vinícius will feel increasingly empowered at the table - especially now that he’s made it clear he will play this coming season at the club regardless. His desire has always been to remain in the white shirt.
From across the Atlantic, where he is fully focused on leading Brazil, Vinícius has been watching the swirl of names linked to Madrid’s forward line. That comes after a season in which much of the debate centered on whether his game meshes with Kylian Mbappé’s. Madrid’s push to sign Álvarez - reportedly with a club-record €150 million ($173 million) offer - adds a layer of uncertainty regarding Vinícius’ future role. It even raises questions about Mbappé, who might have to vacate the central role for a position out wide. A similar scenario would emerge if Olise ultimately arrives.
In one of his election-campaign interviews, club president Florentino Pérez was asked directly: Will Vinícius renew? “I don’t know,” Pérez replied. “If you ask my opinion, I hope he stays - he’s one of the best in the world.” The reality, however, is that many months have passed since extension talks were put on hold. Back in July, Vinícius had already lowered his initial demands, which had been very high. The Brazilian at one point sought close to €30 million ($35 million) per season, riding the momentum of a near Ballon d’Or triumph and The Best award. Before negotiations stalled, though, sources close to the talks say he reduced those demands far more than Madrid increased their original offer. The two sides had narrowed the gap to the point that an agreement seemed imminent - then everything stopped.
Vini’s Real deal: the numbers
Vinícius last renewed with Madrid in 2022, signing a five-year contract through 2027. The agreement was worth €75 million ($87 million) over those five seasons, structured progressively from €13 million ($15 million) at the start to €17 million ($19.6 million) at the end—an average of €15 million ($17.3 million) net per year. After winning The Best, he earned an additional bonus of a couple of million per season. His aim has been to move his salary closer to Mbappé’s. While he opened negotiations on the back of his individual accolades with lofty expectations, Vinícius has since brought those demands down into a range more typical for a player of his stature.
Madrid’s project now has three headline stars: Vinícius, Mbappé, and Jude Bellingham. According to Pérez’s stated vision, the club still intends to add one more ‘galáctico’. All of this unfolds while Vinícius’ renewal remains unresolved. What has changed, however, is the player’s stance, which brings clarity: he will stay at Madrid no matter what until his contract runs its course. And if, against his wishes, no extension is signed, he’ll leave on a free at the end of the deal - just as Mbappé did when he departed Paris Saint-Germain.
