Ignacio Ambriz is the latest candidate to take over as El Tri national team coach with the Deportivo Toluca manager having already been interviewed by Rodrigo Ares de Parga, Director of National Teams.

In a press conference after Toluca’s defeat against Rayados on matchday 5 of the Clausura 2023, Ambriz revealed the details of the conversation he had with Rodrigo Ares de Parga. “They are concerned about filling the position. It was a football talk after they approached me and I see that there is beginning to be a structure” he said.

‘Nacho’ Ambriz was keen to play-down the fact that he is a candidate for the Mexican national team, assuring that he is fully focused on his current situation with Diablos Rojos. “I am calm, working with my team, I owe a lot to Toluca. The talk was about a lot of soccer, about what I think as a Mexican. After 40 years that I have lived since a youth World Cup, as a player, as a captain and as a technical assistant, I think I have a lot of experience to tell you what I help or support. There we must all think that it is for Mexico,” he mentioned.

Announcement expected on 9 February

This week the Mexican Soccer Federation is finally expected to make the official announcement of the new ‘Tri’ coach. According to Fox Sports, the presentation could be on Thursday the 9th with strongest candidates being Guillermo Almada, Miguel Herrera and Marcelo Bielsa as an outside bet.
