Leeds United have sacked head coach Jesse Marsch, according to Álvaro de Grado of Relevo.

Without a league win since November, the American coach was under severe pressure at Elland Road and Sunday’s 1-0 Premier League defeat to Nottingham Forest was the final nail in the proverbial coffin for Marsch, who joined the Yorkshire club in February 2022.

“I take full responsibility, I have to find a way of turning good performances more into winning because that’s exactly where we are and have been for a little while,” Marsch said after the defeat to Forest.

“That is the last step for the potential of where we need to be at. It is my responsibility and I understand their frustration and I accept it, I have to find a way to turn a lot of the good things that are happening into results or we find ourselves in a stressful situation. I understand.

“It’s difficult to have the right words for the team on exactly what is needed right now because the emotion is too much, it is a big week, it is a huge week.

“I understand the frustration and doubts, internally we have belief here, we do. The players are all in, they have given everything they have, we are young and we are trying to put it all together, but I have to find a way right now that come Wednesday we are ready for a big result.

“Everyone is aligned, when we don’t get results we get stressed and then instead of managing development, we are managing stress. I am focused entirely on how to help the group in these moments to be what I know they can be.”

Leeds confirm sacking of Marsch

After reports of Marsch’s dismissal broke in Spain, Leeds later confirmed the news.

“#LUFC can confirm head coach Jesse Marsch has been relieved of his duties,” the club wrote on Twitter.

Less than a year at Leeds

Marsch had a tough act to follow after the sacking of the beloved former Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa, who took the club back to the English top flight after years in the Championship and in League One, and his reign is coming to an end after less than a year in the role.

Leeds are currently hovering above the dreaded relegation zone in the Premier League, and sit in 17th place with just 18 points from 20 games.

Will Bielsa return to the club?

Bielsa was recently in talks with Everton about going back into management following a stint away from the game, however, the Merseyside club appointed former Burnley coach Sean Dyche.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Bielsa returning to the Leeds dugout any time soon is ‘unlikely’.

Manchester United up next

Leeds will now go through their list of candidates for the job in a bid to move away from the foot of the table.

The Whites face Manchester United twice in five days as they now prepare for a trip to Old Trafford on Wednesday without a manager.
