Newcastle 3-3 Manchester City: match summary

(Reuters) - Quickfire goals by Erling Haaland and Bernardo Silva helped Manchester City recover from two goals down to draw 3-3 with Newcastle United in a rip-roaring Premier League clash at St James’ Park on Sunday.

Neither side had conceded a goal in the league this season but Ilkay Gündogan opened the scoring for champions City in the fifth minute, ghosting in and catching the Newcastle defence flat-footed before finishing from close range.

The home side levelled through Miguel Almirón in the 28th minute as he bundled a pinpoint cross from Allan Saint-Maximin into the net before enduring a nervous VAR check that allowed the goal to stand.

Newcastle looked set to pull off a huge upset when they went a goal up through Callum Wilson before halftime, and a brilliant free kick by Kieran Trippier nine minutes after the break put them 3-1 ahead.

That sparked City into life, however, with Haaland hitting a post before pulling a goal back on the hour mark and Silva converted a glorious pass from Kevin De Bruyne to make it 3-3.

City dominated possession in the final stages but had to settle for a draw that left them second in the table on seven points, two behind leaders Arsenal. Newcastle are sixth on five points.

And indeed it is! The whistle goes and the two sides will have to settle for a point each after a pulsating game! Neither side had conceded a single goal before this afternoon in 320 league minutes. 

Pope smothers the ball at the other end and it will be only fitting if that's the final image of the match.

The home side apparently have little appetite for risk though and it winds up all the way back with Ederson.

Kyle Walker sends in a dreadful cross straight to the gloves of Pope and Newcastle will have the final charge.

Silva! In stoppage time-stoppage time the winger has the chance to finish it but hits his shot straight at a defender.

Emil Krafth on to replace the defender.

Dan Burn heads off after going down apparently unchallenged. Not sure what happened there but possibly heat related.

Joelinton goes into the book for taking out Haaland in midfield. He might have seen one awarded the other way seconds earlier when Rodri clambered all over him but the ref didn't spot that. 

City are practically camped in the Newcastle half now but Pope makes another intervention to give the home side a chance to push up.

Five minutes added!

Foden shoots and wins a corner. He might have fed the onrushing Cancelo there on the overlap, as the defender points out.

Nick Pope is a shoo-in for man of the match. The keeper again reads a through ball and sprawls at the feet of Silva to prevent another clear chance.

City are continuiing to push but Newcastle are holding firm. A foul on Guimarães gives the home side the opportunity for a breather.

Botman! The Dutchman latches onto a short clearance but thrashes his shot well over.

Almirón makes way to a huge ovation, Jacob Murphy comes on to replace the goalscorer.

The game has descended into utter chaos now as players fly in on the floor and neither side can string three passes together. Newcastle manage to restore some order and win a corner through Longstaff.

Haaland! It's a similar chance to the one he bagged if a little more of an acute angle and the Norwegian skies his effort! Hands on head from Guardiola.

And after a lengthy look the ref reduces it to a yellow! What a let-off for the Magpies, who surely would have been in trouble with a player fewer for 15 minutes.

Straight red! Trippier is given his marching orders for a terrible challenge on De Bruyne and Newcastle are down to 10!

Newcastle on the front foot again through Saint-Maximin but the Frenchman pulls his effort wide.

Pope again! The Newcastle keeper wins another one-on-one to deny Gündogan a second. That's at least three key saves from the England stopper.

Changes for the hosts as Wilson and Willock make way for Sean Longstaff and Chris Wood.

City scored twice in three and a half minutes there to turn the game on its head.

It seems as though Pope will be ok to continue for now.

Things could be about to go from bad to worse for the home side as Pope goes down with an apparent foot problem.

The Belgian even managed to nutmeg a Newcastle defender there with his clever pass. What a turnaround and what a game!

Incredible! De Bruyne feeds Silva and the Portuguese slots home to level the score!

Haaland again! The Norwegian does all the hard work, nicking the ball and driving towards goal but with only Pope to beat the Newcastle keeper spreads himself and makes the stop!

A loose ball falls to Haaland inside the six-yard area and he smashes the ball into the roof of the net to get City right back in it!

It's not often City find themselves 3-1 down in the Premier League. What can Guardiola conjure in the final 30 minutes?

And what a moment for Newcastle to stamp more authority on the game, Haaland hitting the post at the other end just seconds earlier.

Newcastle have a free kick on the edge of the area and the captain sends a rocket into the top corner that Ederson has not chance of stopping! What a goal!

Haaland! The Norwegian hasn't had much impact so far in the game but he picks up the ball, drives towards the area and forces a wonderful fingertip save from Pope, the home keeper clipping it onto the post.

Bruno Guimarães limps off after a heavy challenge but it looks to be a temporary situation.

Newcastle have started the second half as they finished the first, diving into tackles and breaking up any chance City have of finding some rhythm.

Newcastle have had only 32.5% of the ball so far and have managed a pretty poor 68% pass completion rate but it is in the recovery where Eddie Howe's side have knocked City off their stride. Every time the visitors attack it's broken up and the Magpies have been first to every 50-50. 

And there's the half! What a performance from the hosts, who go into the break 2-1 up after outplaying City for much of the opening 45.

A final chance for City as Dias meets a free kick but he hammers his header over the bar.

Newcastle complain vociferously about a Stones challenge on Schär in the area but the ref was never going to give a penalty for an aerial 50-50.

A fourth corner for Newcastle as Walker is forced into a mistake. City haven't had one yet.

Three minutes added at St James' Park.

It's not difficult to see why Real Madrid are sniffing around Bruno Guimarães. The Brazilian has been everywhere in this opening half and he flies in to break up another City attack.

Newcastle are so solid in defence that City have no way through. A few passes around the edge of the area and Rodri chances his arm but Pope will save those all afternoon.

The home fans are in full voice now. Can Newcastle reverse a trend of one Premier League win in their last 25 attempts against City?

Saint-Maximin goes on another run that carves City open and feeds Wilson, who holds his nerve, picks his spot and beats Ederson with a flicked effort from the outside of his boot! St James' can hardly believe what they are seeing. Newcastle are on fire!

Pope again! Haaland is about to latch onto a through ball but the Magpies keeper is quickest again and dives at the Norwegian's feet to snuff out the danger.

Gündogan! The City captain could barely believe his luck there as a ricochet landed at his feet in the area but Pope reacts swiftly to close down his angle and make the stop.

Schär goes into the book for scything through an in-flight Foden.

Six attempts for each side so far, three on target for Newcastle, four for City.

Over the last five minutes, Newcastle have had 94% of the ball, the stuff of nightmares for Guardiola.

And it stands! The Paraguayan snuck in and chested the ball past Ederson from a Saint-Maximin cross and the Magpies are level!

Goooooooooooooooool.... Almirón! But it looks as though VAR will have a nose at this. It didn't look like the midfielder was offside.

Another corner for the hosts as De Bruyne clips it behind in a defensive and Wilson almost turns it in! The striker didn't have a lot of time to react and in the end he just jabbed the ball into the gloves of Ederson.

Corner for Newcastle as Wilson's effort is deflected. Rodri the culprit there as his pass back into his own half fell straight to Joelinton.

Saint-Maximin! The Frenchman's footwork leaves Stones chasing shadows and he lets fly from inside the area, forcing Ederson into his first real save of the afternoon.

An early change for City as Aké trudges off with what looks like a twang, to be replaced by Rubén Dias. 

De Bruyne! The Belgian curls his effort around the wall but Pope makes an acrobatic save. What a signing the England keeper has been for Newcastle.

Haaland goes down under a challenge from Schär and City have another dangerous free kick.

Almirón! Saint-Maximin does all he can to tee up the Paraguayan but he flashes his shot over from close range! A glorious chance for the Magpies to hit back there.

The home side are a little rattled after that onslaught and need someone to put their foot on the ball - a job that usually falls to the injured Jonjo Shelvey.

City have a free kick in a very useful position now as Joelinton floors Gündogan. Newcastle manage to clear but City are straight back down their throats and Foden forces a smart stop from the boot of Pope.

Haaland! The Norwegian won't want to watch that one back too often as he completely mis-kicks a pull-back from Gündogan with only Pope to beat.

It's end to end already as Saint-Maximin goes on a leggy run, only to lose the ball and hand City the chance to break through De Bruyne, who is clean through but with no support. The Belgian chooses to shoot and Pope makes a decent stop.

It's a rare but complete switch off from the Newcastle defence, who clearly thought Gündogan was offside. Bernardo Silva delivers from the right, the German pulls it down with one touch and strokes it past Pope with his next.

Goooooooooooooool! Gündogan!

Rodri! City piece together a decent attack and the Spain international lets fly from the edge of the area but it's always on the rise and doesn't test Nick Pope.

Ederson! The City keeper is forced into a save with only a few seconds on the clock as he plucks an audacious effort headed for the far corner out of the air, none-too-comfortably.

We're underway at St James' Park! And Newcastle win an early corner...

The stands at St James' are rocking as we await the teams. We have to say we rather enjoyed the "Wor Miggy" banner in the stands. Nice touch.

The 22-year-old England international is set to make his 100th Premier League appearance today. Foden has 25 league goals to his name since making his debut and 46 overall in 172 apperances for City.

City reject 80 million offer from PSG for Bernardo Silva

A little more on the Bernardo Silva situation. Barcelona were apparently interested, at least until City demanded €100m for the Portuguese, leaving PSG with a free run. The Ligue 1 champions reported tabled a bid of €80m but that wasn't enough for City to pick up the phone.

City have arrived at St James' Park and we're just half an hour from kick off now.

Bernardo Silva is back in the starting line-up after rumours of a move to Barcelona have subsided and Haaland will be supported by the Portuguese and Phil Foden. Nathan Aké continues to deputise for the injured Aymeric Laporte in defence.

Newcastle - Manchester City: head to head

Newcastle have picked up just six points from this fixture since January 2008, beating City just once in 25 attempts in the Premier League when the Magpies secured a 2-1 home win in January 2019. Few will be betting on the hosts to repeat that feat this afternoon, but Newcastle are vastly improved under Howe and have the ability to get at City's back four through Allan Saint-Maximin, Real Madrid target Bruno Guimarães and Joelinton.

Last season City beat Newcastle 4-0 and 5-0.

City add to already packed squad

The champions haven't gone crazy this summer either, but then there is little need for Pep Guardiola to pull out his paymesters' check book. Erling Haaland was the big name signing City were bound to make, with Kalvin Phillips arriving from Leeds, left back Sergio Gómez from Anderlecht and keeper Stefan Ortega arriving on a free to complement a squad that could afford to let Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko leave. City in fact turned a profit this summer and still have the strongest squad in the division

No big Saudi spend this summer

A takeover of Newcastle by the Saudi Public Investment Fund last year led to speculation of a lavish spend on players this summer, but that has so far failed to materialise. Sven Botman, Matt Targett and Nick Pope arrived during the summer for a combined fee of €66m and striker Chris Wood joined during the January window, but links to the likes of Neymar, Hugo Etikite and other big names never went any further than the back pages. 

The best bit of business the Magpies' new owners have done was hiring Howe. In a leage table of results based on games played since his arrival in November 2021, Newcastle sit comfortably in the top three with Manchester City and Liverpool.

Newcastle go into the game ninth as it stands, having beaten newly promoted Forest in their opener, before a 0-0 draw with Brighton last time out. While Eddie Howe will be happy with how his defence have entered the new season, the former Bournemouth manager will be only too aware that his attacking players will need to produce something special today if Newcastle are to beat the champions.

Today's contest sees the only two sides not to have conceded a goal in the English top flight this season go head to head. City are currently third and have been installed as the firm early favourites to lift the title this season after sweeping past West Ham and Bournemouth for a return of six goals.
