Newcastle United made history on their return to Champions League action at St James’ Park, demolishing French champions Paris Saint-Germain 4-1.

The Premier League side took a three-goal lead through Miguel Almiron, Dan Burn and Sean Longstaff, sending the home support into ecstasy. The visitors got a goal back through Lucas Hernandez but Newcastle defender Fabian Schar scored a late screamer to put the exclamation point on a statement performance.

This season sees Eddie Howe’s side return to the Champions League for the first time since 2002/03. Wednesday’s win over elite opposition announces their return to the top table of European football.

Two decades since Newcastle’s last Champions League victory

The Magpies began this year’s competition with a goalless draw against AC Milan at San Siro. Against PSG they outplayed the perennial French champions and secured their first Champions League victory in 20 years.

The last time Newcastle tasted success in the Champions League proper was on 26 February 2003, in their second round game against Bayer Leverkusen. Newcastle ran out 3-1 winners over the German side, thanks to a hat-trick from Alan Shearer.

Shearer, the Premier League’s all-time top scorer, retired in 2006 and Newcastle had not made another Champions League appearance since this year’s competition.
