FC Barcelona forward, Robert Lewandowski, was forced off injured against Porto in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.

The Catalan side overcame their Portuguese opponents 0-1 away from home, thanks to a goal from Ferran Torres on the stroke of half-time. In what was the hardest game on paper for Barça in a relatively kind group, the side battled through a tough 90 minutes and got the victory, but the bad news had already arrived when star forward Lewandowski went down after a challenge after around half an hour.

He tried to hobble on, but it was not to be for the 35-year-old, and he was replaced shortly after by the eventual goalscorer.

What injury does Robert Lewandowski have?

After carrying out tests on Thursday morning, Barcelona revealed that Lewandowski had “sprained his left ankle” and would be “out of action until the injury heels”. It had initially been hoped the Pole had only suffered a minor knock but, as revealed by Catalunya Ràdio, the bruising around his tibia worsened in the hours after the incident.

When will Robert Lewandowski be back fit for Barcelona?

After the final whistle in Porto, the general feeling within the Barça camp was that the striker would be available to play in the next LaLiga game away to Granada but Thursday’s revelation means he has been ruled out of the trip to Andalusia on Sunday.

And, AS has learned, Lewandowki has suffered a Grade 2 sprain, which could keep him on the sidelines for three to four weeks. That means the former Bayern Munich star will almost certainly miss Poland’s Euro 2024 qualifiers, the home match against Athletic Club on 22 October and, potentially, against Real Madrid the following weekend.

A huge blow for Barça and head coach Xavi Hernández, who is already sweating over the fitness of Pedri, Raphinha and Frenkie De Jong ahead of El Clásico.
