Newcastle 0-1 Liverpool: as it happened
Newcastle 0-1 Liverpool: summary
A first-half strike from midfielder Naby Keita helped Liverpool secure a hard-earned 1-0 win at Newcastle United on Saturday as Jürgen Klopp's side kept their Premier League title hopes alive and provisionally went top of the table.
The victory put Liverpool two points ahead of champions Manchester City, who can regain first spot with a win at Leeds United later on Saturday. Newcastle are ninth on 43 points.
After an early half-chance for Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool hit the front in the 19th minute through Keita when he cleverly dribbled past Martin Dubravka to slot home following a smart link-up with Diogo Jota.
Liverpool, with possibly one eye on the second leg of their Champions League semi-final against Villarreal on Tuesday, started without Mohamed Salah, Fabinho and Trent Alexander-Arnold but their absence was seldom felt as the visitors were barely troubled in the opening exchanges.
With Liverpool dominating possession, Newcastle's best moment of the half arrived when Miguel Almirón had the ball in the net after being played through by Bruno Guimaraes, only for the Paraguayan to be flagged offside.
Liverpool had a flurry of chances after the break but failed to beat Dubravka, who twice denied Jota as well as substitute Salah before Luis Diaz hit the side-netting in the 84th minute.
While we wait for the City game later on (which you can follow live on here with AS USA of course) why not pop over to LaLiga to see if Real Madrid can wrap up the title. Carlo Ancelotti's side need just a point from their home game against Espanyol to be crowned champions.
Liverpool extend their winning record for a single season at St. James Park and will now have more than half an eye on the City result later when Pep Guardiola's side take on Leeds United.

Nope, there's the whistle as Dubravka sends the ball forward! Liverpool carve out a precious 1-0 win and go temporarily top of the table.
Fabinho sends a shot well over the bar and Newcastle may have time for one more charge here...
Jota is scythed down and Liverpool have a free kick. The away fans are in full throat now as the clock ticks down...
Joelinton is back in defence to prevent Gomez getting to the byline.
Four minutes added! It will be a long four minutes for Liverpool, who have had plenty of opportunities to extend their narrow lead.
Salah! The Egyptian has a great chance to finish the game off as he breaks and beats Targett in a foot race but Dubravka comes out, stands his ground and makes the stop.
Bruno! That's almost the first save Alisson has had to make this afternoon as the Brazilian lets loose from the edge of the area. It's squeaky bum time for Liverpool fans now...
Krafth heads off after a torrid afternoon dealing with Diaz, Jacob Murphy on to replace him.
Luis Diaz! What a run inside from the area from the winger, who thrashes a shot into the side netting. He feels it took a nick and should have been a corner but a goal kick is given.
Saint-Maximin hasn't been making the best decisions this afternoon and a Newcastle attack breaks down as he gets crowded out.
Dubravka! He has to be man of the match. This time he claws away a fine effort from Jota that was heading for the top corner. Exceptional performance from the Slovenian today.
Thiago comes on for Milner, who gets a round of applause from both sets of fans having played for Newcastle way back when.
Newcastle break through Saint-Maximin and Wood should have beaten Alisson there but once again, the flg is up for a very tight offside call.
A wonderful ball from Shelvey should have sent Saint-Maximin in but the one occasion the Frenchman's touch deserts him... Matip is there of course to mop up.
There are some half-hearted appeals for a penalty as Robertson goes down in the area but the ref, who hasn't put a foot wrong this afternoon, makes the right call.
Salah! Luis Diaz again gets the better of the Newcastle right and tees up the Egyptian, whose shot is straight at Dubravka.
Great footwork from Luis Diaz and Salah almost gets on the end of it but he can't control the cross and Dubravka gathers.
And that's it for Mané as he heads off with Jordan Henderon. Salah and Fabinho on for Liverpool.
Mané gets his name in the book for a late challenge on Dubravka.
Willock off for Newcastle, Chris Wood on.
Joelinton wriggles through but Alisson dives at his feet to smother the danger. The flag was up in any case.
Mané! Another great ball from Gomez and the forward hits it first time then sends his hands to his head as it flashes wide. That's two very presentable chances for the Senegalese now and he knows at least one of them should have hit the back of the net.
It's Newcastle who make the first change though, Schar limping off after that earlier challenge with Jamaal Lascelles coming on.
Dubravka! What a game the Magpies stopper is having. He comes for one ball punches clear under presure then recovers to stop Roberton's effort on the rebound.
Plenty of movement on the Liverpool bench. Klopp will have half an eye on Villarreal from the hour mark.
Newcastle have a free kick and Shelvey goes around the wall and Milner takes the full force in his face. He's up quickly enough though. He's had a few of those in his long career.
Matip gets the better of Saint-Maximin again and the Frenchman throws up his arms in despair. It's been a fine performance from the Liverpool defender to keep the Frenchman firmly in his pocket.
Joe Gomez goes in the book after Willock turns the Liverpool defender and is brought down to prevent a break.
Saint-Maximin goes on a slalom run through the Liverpool defence, tying up four or five defenders, but no black and white shirts are in support when he lifts his head.
And we're back underway at St James Park!
Here's a guide as to how and where you can catch the later game this afternoon.
And there's the half-time whistle! Liverpool go into the break 1-0 up, while Newcastle fans boo the match officials off after that disallowed Almirón goal.

Newcastle appeal for a foul on Almirón right on the edge of the area but the ref is having none of that. Two minutes added.
74 percent possession for Liverpool and eight attempts, to just the two from the Magpies.
Joelinton and Jota get into a bit of handbags after a challenge and the ref nips it in the bud with a caution for each.
Milner! The clearance from the resulting corner drops kindly for the veteran midfielder, who controls and flashes a half-volley just wide!
Dubravka again! A flying save from the Slovakian denies Jota, whose header was arrowing into the top corner.
Gooooooooooooo..... Nope, the flag is up! Almirón is through and manages to wriggle over the challenge of Alisson to slot in but the lino saves Liverpool's bacon!
Liverpool with upwards of 70 percent of possession so far and Newcastle with just the one shot on target.
Dubravka! A great save from the Newcastle keeper after Luis Diaz streaks away down the right and feeds Mané. The Senegal forward's shot is hit well enough but the Slovakian makes a solid stop and Klopp is hopping on the touchline, he knows that should have been two.
Luis Diaz works some close-control magic on the far side and feeds Gomez, who again pulls a wonderful centre out of his right boot but Newcastle are defending well, particularly Burns, and he gets there before Mané.
Saint-Maximin gets his first real sniff of goal but drags his shot wide under pressure. Newcastle starting to make inroads in the Liverpool half now.
Joel Matip is winning his duel with Saint-Maximin so far and dispossesses the Frenchman twice in quick succession.
And the VAR room says no dice on Newcastle's complaints. The goal stands and Liverpool have the lead!

Schar is limping off after a typically enthusuastic challenge from Milner.
A lovely one-two sends the Guinean in and he keeps his cool to slot past two defenders with Dubravka stranded. There is going to be a VAR check though for a possible Milner foul on Schar in the build-up.
Gooooooooooooooooooool! Keita!
Alisson is having a shocker this afternoon and almost hands Newcastle another gift, racing out of goal to chase down Saint-Maximin then knocking the ball out for a throw and just about getting back to his sticks in time to prevent the Magpies taking advantage of a quick throw.
Krafth! What a clearance from the Newcastle defender, who cuts out a fizzing Joe Gomez ball right on the boot of Sadio Mané.
Liverpool have settled into a long period of possession but are being shadowed expertly by a well-drilled Newcastle side.
Van Dijk! Liverpool send in a lovely corner and the Dutchman swings a boot at it and connects cleanly but the effort flies over.
Saint-Maximin this time almost pickpockets Alisson but LIverpool manage to hack it clear and a mistake at the other end by Matt Targett lets Keita in for a pop that flashes just wide.
The considerable frame of Dan Burn is under it and Jota skews a shot well wide from the clearance.
Jota goes on a run down the left and Schar brings him down with a little clip of the heels. Free kick to Liverpool.
Alisson gets into a bit of a pickle with a back pass and feeds it straight to Shelvey, but his attempt to squeeze a ball through to Saint-Maximin is hoofed away by Van Dijk.
And we're off! Newcastle get the ball rolling in St James Park.
And Klopp follows suit with the same formation, a few changes from his preferred line-up but still a strong side out for the visitors.

It looks like more or less a full house at St James Park and the sun is shining in Newcastle as the teams prepare to come out.
It's been a fair old while since Newcastle tasted Premier League victory over Liverpool. The last time the Magpies beat today's opponents was in December 2015, a 2-0 victory at St James Park under Steve McClaren courtesy of a Martin Skrtel own goal and a late Gigi Wijnaldum strike.
Salah will be a big miss for the visitors today. Liverpool obviously cannot afford to drop any points with City holding the narrowest of advantages in the title race but Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota are some pretty luxury alternatives for Klopp.

Jürgen Klopp signed a new deal at Liverpool during the week and little wonder the Reds are so keen to retain the German schemer. This season, Liverpool have equalled the club record for wins in a single campaign (including via a penalty shootout), with the 2-0 victory over Villarreal their 43rd of 2021-22.
Newcastle starting XI confirmed
Howay indeed (or should that be Howey these days) as Eddie Howe names a pretty attacking line-up to take on Liverpool, with Saint-Maximin, Joelinton and Miguel Almirón all starting.

As ever, we've put together a handy little guide as to what time the game is on where you are and how you can go about following it.
Liverpool haven't been beaten so far in 2022, the Red's last defeat coming during the festive schedule away at Leicester City. In total, Klopp's side have only lost twice all season, with the other defeat away at West Ham, and the visitors will be heavy favourites to take the three points here having dropped only four points since the New Year. Newcastle, though, will fancy their chances against a side still fighting for silverware on four fronts.
Newcastle vs Liverpool: team news
Jürgen Klopp has no injury concerns going into this one but may be tempted to make some changes with the Champions League semi-final return leg against Villarreal to consider. Roberto Firmino remains absent though injury but otherwise the German has a full squad to choose from.
Newcastle are missing Ryan Fraser, Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier but the form of Joelinton and Allan Saint-Maximin should give Liverpool's back four something to think about. Given that Newcastle are out of danger, Howe may well take a swing this lunchtime and Klopp will be wary of the danger posed on the flanks by Matt Targett and Emil Krafth.
Howe to save a season
Newcastle have been transformed under Eddie Howe, who took over at the struggling side last November. The Magpies have won their last four in the Premier League and 10 of their last 14 to cruise up the table to ninth and secure their top-flight status for another season.
