Neymar hints at possible retirement in 2026: “By December, I might walk away”

The Santos star, who turned 34 this month, was emphatic in an interview with UOL about his long-term plans and his World Cup goal.

The future of Neymar, now 34 and back with Santos, is once again at the center of debate in Brazil. In a candid interview with CazéTV, the Brazilian star opened up about his long road back from a serious knee injury—and surprised fans by admitting he may be considering retirement before the year is over.

At 34, Neymar didn’t shy away from the possibility that this season could be his last. His comments were blunt and unexpected:“I don’t know what’s going to happen from here on out. It could be that December comes and I decide to retire.”

A difficult comeback and growing criticism

For now, Neymar says he’s committed to finishing the season, though the journey has been anything but smooth. A second knee procedure delayed his return to the field and fueled criticism about his fitness and dedication.

“I wanted to come back this season at 100%, which is why I missed some matches,” he explained. “I know a lot of people talk nonsense without knowing what my day‑to‑day is like, but I have to deal with it.”

His comments were clearly aimed at those who have questioned his physical condition and commitment since his injury.

Eyes on the World Cup—and a spot under Ancelotti

Neymar also made it clear he hasn’t given up on the biggest goal of the year: the 2026 World Cup in North America. Though he hasn’t been guaranteed a spot by Brazil’s coach Carlo Ancelotti, he emphasized how important this season is for him, for Santos, and for the national team.

“This year is very important not only for Santos, but also for the Brazilian national team and for me,” he said, hinting at his desire to prove he’s still capable at the highest level. “I’m happy and calm knowing I’ve come back a little better than before.”

Return to the field after 70 days

Neymar made his long‑awaited return 70 days after his injury, coming off the bench against Velo Clube and contributing an assist in a dominant win.

“I managed to bounce back really well in this last match,” he said. “Obviously, I still need to gain more rhythm, but with perseverance I’ll reach my peak again.”

Still, he left the door wide open for a potential farewell:“I don’t know what will happen from now on—it depends on my heart.”
