“Not even close”: Rob Gronkowski stunned by FC Barcelona atmosphere after meeting Lionel Messi

Rob Gronkowski reflects on his 2017 Barcelona trip, where he met Lionel Messi and said the stadium atmosphere beat even the Super Bowl.

Update:

Fresh off a Super Bowl win, Rob Gronkowski thought he had seen it all when it came to big-game environments. Then he went to Europe.

Back in March 2017, shortly after winning Super Bowl LI with the New England Patriots, Gronkowski traveled to Spain for what he described as more of a celebratory trip than a sports pilgrimage. But what he experienced at a FC Barcelona match, and his meeting with Lionel Messi, left a lasting impression he didn’t expect.

A post-Super Bowl trip turns unforgettable

Gronkowski admitted the trip itself wasn’t initially about football, at least not the kind he was used to.

“That trip was more of a party trip… right off the Super Bowl,” he recalled. “It was my first time going to Spain as well, going to Europe.”

Traveling with friends and connections that gave them access to a suite at the stadium, the four-time Super Bowl champion figured it would be a cool experience. It turned into something much more.

“I was like, ‘Heck yeah, we got to go to a soccer game.’ That’s my very first football game out there that I ever been to.”

The match he attended came during Barcelona’s 2016-17 season, a campaign that still featured Messi at the peak of his powers and one of the most electric atmospheres in world football.

Meeting Messi and witnessing something different

While meeting Messi was a highlight, it was the environment inside the stadium that truly caught Gronkowski off guard.

“What I appreciate about it… was just the atmosphere. It’s a whole different atmosphere.”

From the opening moments, Gronkowski noticed something that stood out compared to American sports crowds.

“There was a section that was just dedicated to just screaming and standing the whole entire game.”

That kind of constant, organized energy, common in European football, was unlike anything he had experienced in the NFL.

“More wild than football fans”

For a player who had participated in multiple Super Bowls, Gronkowski didn’t hesitate when comparing the environments.

These fans are more wild than football fans… They’re in sync with all the things that they do as well.”

He emphasized the coordination and intensity of the crowd, something that goes beyond just noise levels.

“They bring the heat in Europe… way more than NFL games.”

It’s a striking statement considering the scale of American football’s biggest stages, but for Gronkowski, the difference was clear. Perhaps the most surprising part of his reflection was how far he took the comparison. Gronkowski suggested the Barcelons crowd surpassed even the biggest event in American sports.

“It puts our biggest sporting event, which is the Super Bowl… it’s not even close," he said. “We’re talking about just a regular game in general.”

While the NFL dominates in the United States, football, the global game, operates on a different cultural level in Europe and beyond. Clubs like Barcelona are institutions with deeply embedded fan cultures that create unmatched environments week after week.

For Gronkowski, the trip started as a celebration, but ended as a perspective shift. And years later, it’s still something he clearly hasn’t forgotten.
