Barcelona announced Monday that head coach Hansi Flick has signed a contract extension through 2028, with an option to remain with the club until 2029. The 61-year-old German has already indicated this will be the final job of his coaching career.

Flick is expected to keep the same trusted inner circle that arrived with him in Barcelona, including assistants Marcus Sorg, Toni Tapalovic and Heiko Westermann. Goalkeeping coach José Ramón de la Fuente is also set to stay, while former Barça midfielder Thiago Alcántara has continued to work closely with Flick behind the scenes.

Flick’s future never in doubt

Flick’s extension had been viewed as inevitable ever since Joan Laporta won reelection as Barcelona president in March. Ironically, Laporta may not even appear in the official signing photo, as Rafael Yuste is serving as acting president until July 1.

In reality, there was already widespread agreement inside the club earlier this year that Flick should remain in charge. The coach simply wanted to wait until after the presidential election before finalizing his future.

Flick has built a strong relationship with both Laporta and sporting director Deco since arriving in Catalonia. Club leadership respected one of his key demands from the beginning: keeping outside influence away from the locker room and limiting access to only essential personnel.

Had rival candidate Víctor Font won the election, Flick’s future may have become far more complicated. Based on his public comments throughout the season, the German coach appeared far more comfortable continuing under Laporta’s leadership.

How Flick brought Barcelona back to life

Throughout the campaign, Flick repeatedly expressed his affection for the club, fueling expectations that a new deal was coming. The former Bayern Munich manager has settled comfortably into life in Barcelona with his family and has consistently maintained that he does not plan to coach another team after this chapter ends.

In Barcelona, Flick has become much more than a successful manager. He has become a symbol of the club’s revival.

His popularity extends beyond the trophies already collected: two LaLiga titles, two Spanish Super Cups and one Copa del Rey. Perhaps his greatest achievement has been reconnecting the team with its fans and restoring excitement around Barça again.

This Barcelona team has played with aggression, intensity and attacking ambition. Flick’s daring high defensive line, often positioned near midfield, has occasionally backfired. More often, though, it has delivered victories, entertainment and goals.

The numbers underline the transformation. In 116 matches in charge, Flick has won 88, lost 18 and drawn 10. Barcelona has scored 317 goals while conceding 132.

Champions League remains the ultimate goal

Flick has also silenced critics who predicted he would struggle to survive beyond his second season. Instead, he will return in July in perhaps his strongest position yet, with one major target still ahead: winning the Champions League.

“In the final matches at Spotify Camp Nou, the atmosphere was fantastic,” Flick said. “The way the fans welcome us at every game is something very special. Next year, we’ll give everything to make that dream of winning the Champions League come true.”

“Our goal is to win more trophies, maybe also the Champions League. We’re going for it.”

Flick also delivered a message regarding Barcelona’s summer transfer plans.

“We can’t do anything stupid,” he warned, referring not only to potential signings but also possible departures.

Flick grateful for trust from Barcelona leadership

“I can feel the passion of the club, the coaching staff, the players and the fans every single day,” Flick said after signing the extension. “It’s incredible. For me, it’s very special.

“We’ve shared many fantastic moments already, and I’m hungry for more. I want to win more titles. I want to thank the club directors for their trust. I’m very happy.”
