Official: Guillermo Martínez joins Pumas
Puebla was the first to announce the striker’s departure, later conformed by Pumas. He has been brought in to strengthen the attack after the exits of ‘Toro’ Fernández and Juan Dinenno.
Guillermo Martínez, the top Mexican goal scorer in the recent Apertura 2023, has a new club - Pumas. Memo joins after finishing the last tournament with 11 goals - 10 during the regular season and one in the quarter finals against Tigres. He ended just one behind the overall top scorer, Harold Preciado, who bagged 12 for Santos Laguna.
Memo Martínez, who made his senior debut for Mexico in the friendly against Colombia earlier this month, arrives at La Cantera to make up for the losses of Juan Ignacio Dinenno and Toro Fernández, who between them contributed 15 goals last season. Dinenno left to join Cruzeiro while Fernández is set to join Cruz Azul.
New opportunity for Memo at a big club
Martínez emerged from Pachuca’s youth academy in 2013. Four years later, he was sent out to Chivas on loan - however, he failed to shine during his time with Guadalajara. He tried his luck in the Liga de Ascenso and Expansión MX with Mineros Zacatecas, Cafetaleros, Cancún, Celaya and in 2022 he was finally able to reestablish himself in the top flight at Puebla.
Martinez’s numbers as a ‘Camotero’
From 2021 up to the Apertura 2023, Guillermo played a total of 91 games with La Franja, contributing 23 goals and seven assists - of those, 11 were scored in the most recent campaign. His favorite victims were Tijuana, against whom he scored five goals and León with three, but he has never found the target against América, the U’s main rival.
Medical passed
At midday, La Franja announced Guillermo Martínez’s departure. Earlier on Friday, Pumas had informed the player that he had passed his medical and were ready to make the transfer official. Memo will sign a three-year deal with the Auriazules. He follows Piero Quispe as the team’s reinforcements ahead of the Clausura 2024.
