Update:

Barcelona will need another epic Champions League comeback if they are to overturn a two-goal deficit against Atlético Madrid and reach the semifinals, but coach Hansi Flick has been handed some good news after their controversial first-leg loss.

Pedri avoids injury scare, available to play

Key midfield man Pedri was replaced by Gavi at halftime on Wednesday because of hamstring discomfort, sparking fears the 23-year-old had suffered another injury setback.

The Spain international had initially been penciled in for tests on Thursday, but Barça’s medical team ultimately deemed none were necessary and found no risk of any lasting damage.

Flick explained after the loss to Atlético that Pedri’s withdrawal had been purely precautionary, and the German will now look to manage his minutes carefully as he prepares for next week’s decisive second leg.

In theory, Pedri is available for selection for Barcelona’s LaLiga game at home to local rivals Espanyol on Saturday, although how much Flick chooses to use him three days before a huge Champions League clash remains to be seen.

Frenkie de Jong returns after absence

Barça have also been boosted by fellow midfielder Frenkie de Jong’s return to action. The Dutchman has resumed full training after almost six weeks on the sidelines.

Similarly, de Jong could see minutes in the derby, although Flick and his staff will undoubtedly have one eye on Tuesday’s trip to Atlético Madrid.
