Pep Guardiola to leave Manchester City: who will replace him?
City already know that Guardiola will not continue next season, although it’s not yet been made official.
Manchester City already know that Pep Guardiola will not continue at the club next season. After a legendary era, the manager will bring his tenure to an end at the conclusion of this campaign.
In other words, he has just two matches left to bid farewell to the team with which he has made history: away against Bournemouth and at home against Aston Villa. City can still fight for the Premier League title, although it appears unlikely as they need Arsenal to slip up. Depending on what happens on the pitch in the coming days, his departure could be officially announced after either of those matches.
In any case, it will mark the end of both the most glorious era in the club’s history and Guardiola’s managerial career.
During his ten seasons at City, he has won 20 trophies. With the English side, he has lifted six Premier League titles, five Carabao Cups, four FA Cups, three Community Shields, one Champions League, one UEFA Super Cup, and one Club World Cup. This season alone, he has already won the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup, and he could still complete the treble by adding the Premier League title.
Maresca’s City contract already signed
What also appears certain is that Enzo Maresca will be his replacement. The Italian has already signed his contract and is working on plans for next season’s squad. He knows the club and its methods well, which is why sporting director Hugo Viana selected him for the difficult task of replacing the most successful manager in City’s history.
Maresca arrives after a successful spell at Chelsea, where he won both the Conference League and the Club World Cup, although he was surprisingly dismissed this season following disagreements with the board.
For Maresca’s arrival to be finalised, an agreement with Chelsea is still required, as the Italian and the London club did not settle the terms of his departure at the time. In principle, however, this should not be a problem.
