Piqué jokes about Mexico: “I’m sure their great World Cup brought the country to a standstill”

The ex-Barcelona player was participating in a live stream with Ibai Llanos and made fun of Mexico’s World Cup performance in Qatar.

The performance of El Tri in the Qatar World Cup 2022 - drawing with Poland, losing to Argentina and beating Saudi Arabia - still continue to be the topic of jokes in some corners of the world. Recently it was the turn of Gerard Piqué, world champion with Spain in 2010 and recently retired footballers after not getting the minutes he desired with FC Barcelona.

In a live stream with online personality Ibai Llanos, the ex-defender made a ‘humourous’ comment regarding the Mexico national team: “I have a question, can they sign players in Mexico? I’m saying it because in Mexico there hasn’t been a single signing yet. Nothing has been announced. I don’t know if the whole country has come to a standstill after the great performance of the national team in the World Cup” he said during the broadcast.

Why are Gerard Pique and Ibai Llanos talking about Mexican football?

It’s worth remembering that the two are the main protagonists of 7-a-side football tournament ‘King’s League’, which plans to reunite ex-players and current stars, such as Javier Hernández. In fact, Chicharito may even ask LA Galaxy for permission to attend the tournament. Iker Casillas will also form part of the project led by the famous Spanish streamer.

Mexico’ campaign at the Qatar World Cup 2022 was ultimately a disappointing one, seeing them go out in the group stages for the first time in 7 editions of the tournament. Despite a strong performance against eventual winners Argentina, El Tri struggled to create and lost 2-0. The result made the circumstances difficult going into the final game, a 2-1 win over Saudi Arabia. Despite getting the three points, the 0-0 against Poland in the opening game proved to be fatal, with the European side, led by Lewandowksi, sent Mexico home early.
