Potential Real Madrid presidential candidate gives huge update
“We are still working on it. We have been given very little time to organize something that really makes sense.”
The deadline for submitting candidacies at Real Madrid is now open after Florentino Pérez officially called the elections. The process will remain open until Saturday the 23rd. Alongside Pérez himself, who has already confirmed his candidacy, another club member is attempting to assemble a fast-track project that would allow him to run: Enrique Riquelme. Judging by his comments yesterday at a padel event organised by Clínica Menorca, the main obstacle, the €187 million ($213m) guarantee, does not appear to be an issue for him.
“Of course I have the guarantee; otherwise, I wouldn’t be talking about this. There will be news in two or three days,” he said after being questioned by the media.
The businessman, who owns 75% of the Cox Energy Group, one of the world’s leading renewable energy companies, was brief but confident in his remarks: “We’ve been sponsoring Clínica Menorca in its fight against breast cancer for six years. I understand your interest in knowing what will happen. We’re still working on it. We’ve been given very little time to organise something truly meaningful and worthwhile, something good for Real Madrid. We’re not going to waste time. We’ll decide in the coming days. And if we do participate, it will be for something meaningful and exciting for the members over the next 10, 15, or 20 years.”
“The idea is to keep working for three more days, and if we’re ready, we’ll go ahead without a doubt,” he added in response to a final question.
Time is of the essence for Enrique Riquelme, who was caught off guard by the announcement of the elections. He has just 10 days to gather all the necessary documentation and present a project to the members, although he has been working towards this since first hinting at a possible candidacy during the 2021 elections.
