EPL to confirm date changes "as early as possible"
The league adds: “The Premier League works with Sky and TNT, as well as local authorities, to confirm the new fixture dates and times with fans as early as possible, looking to announce them about six weeks before each round of fixtures prior to January and five weeks from January onwards.”
Why many of these fixture dates will change
A quick note on the fixture dates: beyond the opening round of games, the Premier League has published all weekend games as being on the Saturday, and all midweek games as being on the Wednesday.
Some of those fixtures will change, chiefly to accommodate the Premier League's broadcasters.
“Generally about five matches each round are selected for live broadcast in the UK and move from their Saturday 15:00 [10:00 a.m. ET] spot,” the league says.
When is Newcastle vs Sunderland?
The Tyne-Wear derbies between Newcastle United and Sunderland are scheduled for the weekends of Saturday, December 5, and Saturday, May 1.
Newcastle host first, before visiting Sunderland next spring.
Liverpool and United meet in Nov and Jan
Another fixture to look it for is the rivalry between Manchester United and Liverpool.
The Reds host the Red Devils on the weekend of Saturday, November 21, before United welcome Liverpool to Old Trafford on the weekend of Saturday, January 23.
25/26 top-two tussles in 26/27
Last season's top two, Arsenal and Manchester City, face off for the first time on the weekend of Saturday, November 28, at the Emirates. The return is two months later, on the weekend of Saturday, January 30.
When are the Merseyside derbies?
Andoni Iraola leads Liverpool into his first Merseyside derby on the weekend of Saturday, November 28. Everton host.
Anfield then hosts the season's second derby on the weekend of Saturday, January 30.
When are the North London derbies?
The first North London derby of the 2026/27 season is on the weekend of Saturday, December 5. Tottenham host Arsenal.
The return, at the Emirates Stadium, is scheduled for the weekend of Saturday, May 1.
When are the Manchester derbies?
In the season's first Manchester derby, United host City on the weekend of Saturday, September 12.
The clubs then meet at the Etihad Stadium on the weekend of Saturday, March 20.
Premier League matchday one: The three promoted teams
While Coventry and Hull both face big-name teams on the opening day of the Premier League season, Ipswich Town host slightly lower-profile opposition on matchday one - but it's still a very tricky opener for the Tractor Boys.
They host Sunderland, who stormed to a seventh-placed finish in 2025/26, at Portman Road on Saturday, August, 22.
So, summing the promoted teams’ first games:
Arsenal vs Coventry City: Friday, August 21, 3:00 p.m. ET
Hull City vs Manchester United: Saturday, August 22, 7:30 a.m. ET
Ipswich Town vs Sunderland: Saturday, August 22, 10:00 a.m. ET

How is the Premier League fixture list compiled?
Before Premier League officials press the ‘generate’ button on the ‘fixtures computer’, months of work goes into laying the groundwork. Working with the IT company Atos, the league starts getting the following season’s schedule ready as early as January.
The preparation process includes consultation with clubs. For example, teams might ask to play at home on a particular date if it coincides with a club anniversary.
There are also few basic ground rules when the fixture list is compiled. They include the following, per the Premier League's website:
- “In any five matches there should be a split of three home fixtures and two away; or two home fixtures and three away.”
- “A team will never have more than two home or away matches in a row and, wherever possible, teams will be home and away either side of FA Cup ties and international breaks.”
- “A club will not start or finish the season with two home or two away matches for reasons of fairness.”
Can Spurs avoid 25/26 struggles?
Having been very much the official Banter Club of the 2025/26 season, Tottenham Hotspur remain a Premier League team by the skin of their teeth.
They beat the drop by just two points, a final-day win over Everton sending West Ham down instead.
In 2026/27, Spurs now commence their first full season under Roberto de Zerbi.
During his decade in charge at City, Guardiola's press conferences offered up plenty of good copy for the journos writing up his remarks.

And then there’s City…
A major position yet to be filled, of course, is the empty bench at Manchester City. After 10 rather successful seasons in charge at the Etihad Stadium, Pep Guardiola departed the club this summer.
Guardiola’s replacement is expected to be the former Leicester City and Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, but it appears the details are still being ironed out on that one.

Carrick era begins full-time at United
It's also worth noting that Manchester United’s first game of the Premier League season will mark the beginning of Michael Carrick's first full campaign (all being well) as the Red Devils' permanent boss.
In May, United confirmed that Carrick, who initially replaced Ruben Amorim in a caretaker role, has been appointed on a contract running until 2028.
The 44-year-old has actually had his first game since being kept on full time: United made the announcement just before Carrick's team beat Brighton on the final day of the 2025/26 league campaign.
We've also spoken to one of Iraola's right-hand men during his successful spell at Bournemouth: fitness coach Pablo de la Torre.
On Iraola, incidentally, we have a couple of pieces that may be of interest to you. First, there's this one.
New men in charge in the EPL
There'll be a few new coaches taking charge of their first Premier League games at their new clubs.
Most notably, Xabi Alonso has been appointed to succeed Liam Rosenior at Chelsea, while Andoni Iraola has replaced Arne Slot at Liverpool.
What’s more, Marco Rose has stepped into Iraola’s shoes at Bournemouth, and Pierre Sage has replaced Oliver Glasner at Crystal Palace.
So we’ll be keeping an eye out for details of these new coaches' first games at the helm.
What we'll be looking out for
So: there's just over half an hour to go until the 2026/27 Premier League fixture list drops.
When it does appear, we'll be looking out for things like: who will Arsenal play as they kick off their title defense? Who will the three promoted teams be starting against?
But what else..?
McKenna steps away ahead of Ipswich's top-tier return
Ipswich will go into their latest crack at the Premier League without the services of Kieran McKenna, one of the game's most highly-rated young head coaches.
After four and a half years in charge at Portman Road, McKenna stepped down as head coach earlier this month.
In a statement, Ipswich said McKenna had and the decision to “take time away from football management”.

Ipswich make immediate EPL comeback - but lose McKenna
Hull, meanwhile, are back in the Premier League after just over a decade away: they were last in the top tier in 2015/16.
Ipswich, on the other hand, secured their Premier League return at the first attempt: after finishing 19th in 2024/25, they bounced straight back under Kieran McKenna.
Coventry back in top tier after quarter-century away
It's been a long time since we've seen Coventry City in the English top tier: 25 years, to be exact.
When the Sky Blues were relegated from the Premier League in 2001, it ended a 34-year unbroken run in the top flight: they had been a first-division club since 1967.
Now, after a stint away that was threatening to hit the three-decade mark too - and included a period in the third tier - Coventry are back. They're led by Frank Lampard, a three-time Premier League winner as a player at Chelsea.

Hull win scandal-hit playoffs
Oli McBurnie’s 95th-minute goal gave Hull a 1-0 playoff-final victory over Middlesbrough - a team that had actually lost to Southampton in the semifinals.
But the Saints’ exclusion over the ‘spygate’ scandal meant it was Boro who finally contested the playoff decider against the Tigers.

Who’s new in the 2026/27 Premier League next season?
In 2026/27, our three newly promoted teams are: Coventry City, Hull City and Ipswich Town.
Coventry were winners of the Championship, England's second tier, racking up 95 points to take top spot.
The Sky Blues won the division by an 11-point margin ahead of Ipswich, who grabbed the second automatic promotion spot.
Having finished sixth, Hull City then emerged from the four-team promotion playoffs, beating Middlesbrough in May’s final at Wembley.

Arsenal seek first back-to-back titles in nine decades
Arsenal, of course, head into the 2026/27 Premier League season as the defending English champions. The Gunners won their first league crown in 22 years in May, holding off Manchester City's title challenge to end their wait for a 14th domestic championship.
Can Mikel Arteta’s men go back to back in 2026/27? Were they to do so, it would be the first time Arsenal have won the English league in consecutive seasons since all the way back in 1934/35.
So who are the Premier League teams in 2026/27?
Next season's Premier League will feature the following 20 clubs:
Arsenal
Aston Villa
Bournemouth
Brentford
Brighton
Chelsea
Coventry City
Crystal Palace
Everton
Fulham
Hull City
Ipswich Town
Leeds United
Liverpool
Manchester City
Manchester United
Newcastle United
Nottingham Forest
Sunderland

When does the 2026/27 Premier League season finish?
Next season, the 38th and final round of games will be played on Saturday, May 30, 2027. As ever, all these matches will kick off at the same time on the final day.
In all, the next Premier League season will involve 33 rounds of matches played over weekends, and five midweek rounds.
When does the 2026/27 season start?
The 2026/27 Premier League season is due to kick off on Saturday, August 22, 2026.
That's a week later than normal. The league says: "This is because, with an increasingly congested global football calendar, player welfare remains a priority for the Premier League.
“Starting on 22 August will allow for 89 clear days from the end of the current season and 33 days from the FIFA World Cup 2026 final.”
What time will the Premier League schedule be revealed?
The Premier League is going to be publishing next season's schedule at 10:00 a.m. in the U.K.
In the U.S., that's 5:00 a.m. ET/2:00 a.m. PT.
