Newcastle United are soaring on the pitch in the Premier League, but struggling behind the scenes. Eddie Howe has worked his magic once again, turning the team’s fortunes around in the latter part of the first half of the season.

After a rocky start, plagued by injuries and flirting with the relegation zone, the Magpies are now back in form and smiling again. However, their off-field issues cast a shadow over their resurgence.

The club is grappling with substantial debts owed to players and agents, which will likely force them to offload several stars in upcoming transfer windows. This financial crisis has been simmering since last September, when payments were due.

Sources close to those affected reveal that “to this day, the debt remains unpaid.” While The Athletic recently reported that “the club has already made the deposits or they are on the way,” many involved parties have yet to receive their share of the money.

Despite being hailed as the richest football club in the world following the acquisition by the Public Investment Fund (PIF), Newcastle find themselves in financial turmoil. The situation has particularly impacted high-profile players. Stars like Bruno Guimarães, Sandro Tonali, and Alexander Isak, who receive part of their salaries through image rights, have gone months without receiving those payments.

A Forced Sell-Off?

To address their financial woes, Newcastle are preparing for a small winter exodus. “Several key players are up for sale,” sources close to the club told AS, although they acknowledge that “it will be difficult to complete deals in January.” Instead, major departures are more likely in the summer transfer window. Big names such as Bruno Guimarães, Anthony Gordon, and Alexander Isak could leave the club, potentially at reduced prices compared to previous valuations.

There will be no shortage of suitors. Manchester City, for instance, are keen to sign Guimarães as they look to bolster their midfield following Rodri’s injury. The Brazilian’s price tag is estimated at €60–80 million, a bargain given his stellar performances this season. Meanwhile, Arsenal remain interested in Alexander Isak as they seek a reliable striker to help them contend for the league title. While the Swedish forward is high on their list, Matheus Cunha has emerged as an alternative.

Other departures could include veterans like Kieran Trippier and Miguel Almirón. Trippier has attracted interest from clubs in England and abroad, while Almirón is reportedly weighing options in Brazil, Saudi Arabia, or a potential return to Major League Soccer.

The January sales are set to begin at St. James’ Park, with Newcastle hoping to steady their financial ship in time for a brighter future.
