Pressure mounts on Diego Cocca to deliver in Nations League and Gold Cup
Jesús Martínez, president of Grupo Pachuca, declared that the Mexico coach will be evaluated by what happens in the next official tournaments.
After the recent friendly matches against Guatemala and Cameroon, more demanding challenges are just around the corner for the Mexico national side. Diego Cocca’s El Tri face the USNMT in the semi-final of the Concacaf Nations League Final Four with the 2023 Gold Cup staring in a matter of weeks with Mexico pitted in Group B along with Haiti, Honduras and Qatar.
One of Mexican football’s most influential figures Jesús Martínez from Grupo Pachuca (owners of Liga MX sides Pachuca CF and Club Leon along with Spain’s Real Oviedo, was asked for his views on Cocca’s tenure to date on the Mexico bench.
The businessman stated: “We cannot read too much into the recent friendly games as evaluations can only come when the team are involved in official matches and not the friendlies”, he added he would have liked to see the players who play in the Nations League and Gold Cup participating in these friendly games respects the coach’s decisions.
He concluded: “The United States have a strong team with the bulk of their players playing in key European league. We hope Mexico can restore pride and give satisfaction to the fans who are still feeling the pain of how the World Cup transpired”.
