Concacaf have announced that their Disciplinary Committee has made the decision to expel the Nicaraguan national team from the forthcoming Gold Cup 2023 and its place set to be taken by Trinidad and Tobago.

“The Concacaf Disciplinary Committee has decided to exclude the Nicaraguan Men’s National Team from competing in the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup, and relegate it to the 2023/24 CNL League B”, the Central American governing body announced in a statement.

“The Nicaraguan men’s national team will be replaced in the Group Phase of the 2023 Gold Cup (Group A) by the Trinidad and Tobago Men’s National Team, by virtue of being the best second place in the League B groups in the CNL 2022/23″.

And, regarding the 2023/24 Concacaf Nations League, Concacaf stated: “The Nicaraguan men’s national team will be replaced in the 2023/24 CNL A League by the Trinidad and Tobago men’s national team, by virtue of being the best second place of the League B groups in the CNL 2022/23″.

Nicaragua will not be able to participate in the 2023 Gold Cup for fielding an ‘ineligible’ player in eight international matches. Richard Rodríguez Álvez was born in Toledo, Uruguay, which is why, according to Concacaf protocols, he was not yet authorized to represent Nicaragua.

The 2023 Gold Cup gets underway on 24 June and runs through to 16 July.
