PSG star Kylian Mbappé forced off against Marseille: what injury does he have and how long will he be out?

Luis Enrique’s side thrashed rivals Marseille 4-0 on Sunday but played more than half the match without the Real Madrid target.

París (Francia)

Long-term Real Madrid target Kylian Mbappé was forced off early on in Le Classique in Ligue 1, which saw Paris Saint-Germain take on bitter rivals Marseille at Parc des Princes. The France captain suffered an injury to his left leg in a challenge with Argentinian defender Leonardo Balerdi in just the eighth minute of the clash, which led to Achraf Hakimi opening the scoring from a free-kick.

Mbappé attempted to play on for another 25 minutes but could be seen limping and looked to be in constant pain, and was eventually replaced by Portuguese striker Gonçalo Ramos with just under quarter-of-an-hour of the first half still to play, with the score still at 1-0.

Mbappé's injury history with left ankle

Balredi’s kick out at Mbappé on the edge of the box was a clear foul but initially appeared relatively innocuous, although the fear is that the 24-year-old has suffered some damage to his left ankle, which already gave his problems last season, forcing him to miss the first leg of the Champions League round-of-16 tie against Bayern Munich.

There has been no indication as to how severe the injury is just yet, with Mbappé expected to undergo tests on Monday. Despite being without their talisman, PSG went on to dismantle Marseille in Paris, with substitute Ramos scoring twice in a 4-0 rout.

Will Mbappé be fit to play against Newcastle in the Champions League?

The Ligue 1 champions, who are now two points behind surprise leaders Brest after six games, travel to bottom team Clermont next weekend before they face Premier League side Newcastle United at St James’ Park in the second game of the Champions League group stage on 4 October.
