Veteran goalkeeper Sebastián Sosa, who joined Liga MX giants Pumas in December, has revealed that it was he who got in touch with Los Auriazules about a switch from Argentinian club Independiente.

Sosa “explained situation” to Pumas boss

In an interview with TUDN, Sosa explained that he contacted Rafael Puente del Río, Pumas’ new head coach, in a bid to make the move happen. “He didn’t come after me,” the 36-year-old Uruguayan said.

“I explained my situation to Rafa. There had been rumours that I could join Pumas and, to be honest, I knew nothing about that, but I wanted to get in touch with the people who make these types of decisions [at the Mexican club].

“So I asked other players for Rafa’s number. I’ve always said that, as long as you’re respectful, you can speak to whoever you need to. We spoke without intermediaries.”

“Up front” talks with Pumas boss led to move

Sosa, who was part of Uruguay’s squad at the 2022 World Cup, added that his discussions with Puente del Río were “very direct, up front and honest”, adding: “It all worked out well.”

Pumas are Sosa’s fifth team in Mexico. The keeper has previously had stints with Pachuca, Mineros de Zacatecas, Morelia and Mazatlán.
