Uncertainty surrounds the future of Real Betis winger Diego Lainez, who has been on loan at Portuguese club Braga this season.

According to reports in Portugal, Braga want to cut short Lainez’s stay at the club and send the 22-year-old back to Spain this January. However, his prospects of regular football at Betis are slim.

Winger could seek to revive career back in Liga MX

Lainez wants to remain in Europe, but he doesn’t have many options - so the Mexico international could move back to his home country.

Per ESPN, the player’s camp are not ruling out a return to Mexico, even if it’s just a six-month spell to kick-start his career before trying again in European football.

Previously, Mexican giants Club América and Tigres have both tried to lure Lainez back to the Liga MX, only to be rebuffed.

Lainez has barely featured for Braga

ESPN also reports that the premature termination of his Braga loan deal has proved a major blow to Lainez’s morale. The youngster had been confident of making the kind of impact in Portugal that he has failed to make at Betis, where he is under contract until 2025.

Since joining Os Arcebispos in August, Lainez has been restricted to just 153 minutes of Primeira Liga football across six top-flight appearances, scoring once.
