Pumas manager Antonio Mohamed was hit with a hefty fine after his comments on referees following his side’s defeat to América in the Clásico Capitalino, in which he implied that the referees had been told what to do during the match. Now, he has had his say once again.

After the comfortable 4-0 home win over Querétaro, Mohamed sat down in front of the press and was immediately asked about his comments and the subsequent fine that he was handed after the FMF ruled them out of order.

“I never said who referees got their orders from”, Mohamed remarked when questioned after the win, “everything would have been different if someone had asked me and I said the VAR. It’s as simple as that.”

What did Antonio Mohamed say about referees?

“Afterwards, I read thousands of interpretations and things that didn’t happen”, he continued, “the only person who heard me say something was the América club doctor. I never get involved with the players. Everything is always down to interpretations.”

For context, the Pumas boss had previously said after the game against América that “I won’t give an opinion on the referee”, before giving an opinion, “He simply follows orders”. This sentence put Mohamed in the spotlight and eventually it was decided by football’s governing body in Mexico that a punishment was the only necessary ending to the situation.

What was Antonio Mohamed’s punishment for the comments?

Mohamed was slapped with a fine from the FMF and they published a statement on the matter, saying “the Disciplinary Commission reports that it decided to financially sanction the technical director of the Universidad Nacional Club, Antonio Mohamed who, during the match and at the press conference at the end of the match between América and Universidad Nacional, engaged in conduct that is detrimental to the Fair Play of sport, to federated fair play in general. UNAM has been warned about the future conduct of its coaching staff, since in the event that this type of actions arise again, the Disciplinary Commission may impose more severe sanctions against them.”
