Rafael Puente’s situation at Pumas
Puente signed with Pumas for six months, meaning in June, his contract with the club expires.
Club Universidad Nacional and Rafael Puente are close to a crisis point. The Mexican club are five games without a win in the Clausura 2023 and it will soon be a year without a win away from the Estadio Olímpico Universitario.
The defeat against Chivas Guadalajara on matchday 7 of the season weighed heavily on the dressing room. The Pumas board of directors were not happy with the result, but it appears they will give Puente some time to turn the situation around.
Short-term contract at Pumas
The Mexican tactician’s contract with the club is only for six months, with an option for a further season. The club know that if he is sacked they would have to pay financial compensation, so they prefer to wait three more months to decide if he will continue in the dugout.
Another reason that Pumas are not looking for a new coach is that the transfer window is closed. Any coach who would come in would have to play with what is available in the Pumas squad and wait several weeks to be able to put together a new team.
The match against Mazatlán will be another test for the Mexican at Universidad.
