Man Utd interim boss Rangnick considers offer from Austria national team

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick is considering an offer to manage the Austria national team, according to several reports.

United appointed Rangnick in November 2021 after sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The German coach was hired in an interim capacity, with the Premier League side eventually appointing Erik Ten Hag, who will join from Ajax.

Rangnick will start a two-year consultancy role with United from the end of the season, and if he accepts the role of Austria manager, could work both roles.

The Athletic reports that the job offer does not impact Rangnick’s plan to work in a consultancy role at Manchester United.

Rangnick has been in talks with Austria and a formal announcement could be made as early as Friday.

Austria have been without a head coach since Franco Foda resigned in March.

Rangnick moving upstairs

The 63-year-old, who takes charge of United against Chelsea on Thursday said on the day of the game that he was determined to help United “change for the better” once he moves into his consultancy role at Old Trafford.

“Yes I will be (here next season),” he said, when asked about his planned two-year consultancy position. “I’m looking forward to working in that advisory role and obviously help Erik as much as he wants it himself.

“So far we haven’t been able to speak with each other and we have had no contact — he has his focus on Ajax, I have my focus on Manchester United here.

“But obviously I’m more than willing and prepared to help both Erik and whomever in the club in order to change everything for the better.”
