Manchester United host Chelsea in Thursday’s Premier League meeting at Old Trafford as two German tacticians look for the three points.

United’s 3-1 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates on Saturday afternoon all but ended their chances of finishing in the top four and qualifying for the Champions League.

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick will be replaced by Ajax head coach Erik ten Hag at the end of the current season, of which United have just four games remaining.

Team news

For United, Fred remains sidelined as he has yet to recover from a hip flexor problem. Harry Maguire and Jadon Sancho, Edinson Cavani, Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw will also miss out. Right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka is also a doubt.

Thomas Tuchel will lose Antonio Rudiger to Real Madrid this summer, but the German defender returned to Chelsea’s training ground on Tuesday, after missing the games against Arsenal and West Ham through injury. Reece James is likely to feature, while Andreas Christensen, who has been suffering with stomach cramps, is still being assessed.

Callum Hudson-Odoi (calf) and Mateo Kovacic (ankle) will miss the trip to Old Trafford but could return to action before May’s FA Cup final with Liverpool.
