Rayados’ pitch in sorry state after The Weeknd’s gig
The pitch at BBVA stadium was left in a very poor condition after The Weeknd’s concert. It has yet to be decided whether Saturday’s game will go ahead or not.
On Tuesday, 54,000 fans descended on BBVA stadium to attend The Weeknd’s two-hour, sell-out concert as part of the Canadian singer’s After Hours til Dawn Tour. The following day, Monterrey’s groundsmen set about working on the pitch to see if it will be ready for this weekend’s game against Santos Laguna.
Meanwhile the Liga MX announced that it would carry out its own inspections of the pitch on Thursday and Friday before making a decision on whether the game can go ahead as planned or postpone it until a later date.
The morning after the concert, several photographs were published on social media by Omar Zerón. While the playing surface did not appear too bad in the images, part of the main stage still needed to be dismantled, which is situated in one of the areas around the goalmouth.
Liga MX to decide
The Liga MX will decide in the next few hours whether the match can go ahead. There will be some clues beforehand - for example, coach Fernando Ortíz is due to give a press conference after training on Friday afternoon. If that goes ahead then it’s certain that the match will be played, regardless of whether the league has made an announcement or not.
What happens if the game is postponed?
If the Liga MX decide that the pitch is not in conditions for the match to be played this weekend, it will be postponed, with a rescheduled date already set - Wednesday 8 November.
