Rayados’ rough ride: Monterrey on winless Tijuana run
This weekend, Monterrey faces a Tijuana team that has been something of a bogey team for Los Albiazules in recent times.
Rayados have been trending upward to start the Clausura 2026, riding back‑to‑back wins into their next matchup. They’ll look to keep that momentum going when they face the Tijuana - a team that has given them more trouble than they’d like in recent years.
Monterrey will host the border‑town club at Estadio BBVA on Saturday, on matchday 4 of the Liga MX campaign. The Regiomontanos are winless in their last four meetings with Tijuana, a stretch that includes three draws and a loss.
That defeat came at the “Gigante de Acero” during the Clausura 2025 regular season, when Xolos stunned the home side with a late 2–1 victory, courtesy of goals from José Zúñiga and Gilberto Mora.
When did Monterrey last beat Xolos?
The last time Rayados beat Tijuana dates back to October 2023 - just over two years ago - and it also happened on home turf. That night, Los Albiazules rolled to a 3-1 win thanks to goals from Rogelio Funes Mori, Jesús Gallardo, and Víctor López.
Domènec Torrent’s squad currently sits on six points out of a possible nine to start the Clausura, rebounding from an opening loss to Toluca with victories over Necaxa and Mazatlán. However, they’re dealing with the ongoing situation surrounding striker Germán Berterame, who is set to depart for Inter Miami, leaving the club still searching for his replacement.
Meanwhile, Sebastián “Loco” Abreu’s Xolos have collected five points so far, with one win and two draws - meaning they remain unbeaten to this point. They defeated Querétaro and drew with Atlético San Luis and Club América. Their roster has also taken a hit, as young standout Gilberto Mora has been sidelined with a groin injury.
