Real Madrid’s fears have been confirmed, with Jude Bellingham set for three weeks on the sidelines because of an ankle sprain suffered in Saturday’s victory over Girona at Estadio Santiago Bernabéu.

The Englishman’s ankle swelled up significantly overnight, leaving him in a considerable amount of pain as he turned up for tests, the results of which have confirmed he has suffered a high-grade ankle sprain.

Bellingham to miss Champions League and LaLiga matches

The 20-year-old will now almost certainly miss Madrid’s next four matches, in which they will face RB Leipzig (away) in the Champions League round of 16, and Rayo Vallecano (away), Sevilla (home) and Valencia (away).

There is a slim chance of him being available to play in the last of those fixtures at Mestalla, although the return leg of the European tie against the Germans is a more realistic target.

Bellingham suffered the injury in the 50th minute of the 4-0 thrashing of Girona. As he attempted to rob possession from Pablo Torre, his opponent accidentally trod on the midfielder’s ankle, which immediately appeared to twist. Although he returned to the field of play to score his second goal of the game, which was Real Madrid’s third, he had to be replaced by Brahim Díaz soon after.
