Update:

Lionel Messi has spent much of his career rewriting football history, but the 2026 World Cup has taken that to another level. Already the defining figure of Argentina’s 2022 triumph, Messi has continued to extend, and in some cases completely redefine, the record books during this tournament.

Now, after leading Argentina into the World Cup final again, this time against Spain, Messi’s legacy at the competition has reached unprecedented heights.

Here are the key World Cup records he has broken, and extended, during the 2026 tournament.

Most World Cup appearances (player)

Messi became the first player in history to feature in six different World Cups, having now played in editions spanning from 2006 to 2026.

The Argentina captain had already matched the record for most World Cup editions after being selected for Germany 2006, South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022. By featuring against Algeria in Argentina’s opening match of the 2026 tournament, Messi officially entered his sixth World Cup, a milestone previously unmatched in men’s football.

Before Messi, the record stood at five World Cups, shared by legends including Lothar Matthäus, Gianluigi Buffon and Rafael Márquez. Cristiano Ronaldo also reached six World Cups during the 2026 tournament, joining Messi in that historic group.

Most matches in World Cup history

Messi entered the 2026 tournament already holding the record for most World Cup appearances, having played 26 matches across his first five tournaments.

During Argentina’s run in 2026, he has continued extending that record. After appearing in the semifinal victory over England, Messi has played 33 World Cup matches, moving further clear of the previous benchmark held by Germany’s Lothar Matthäus, who finished his career with 25 appearances.

The leaderboard now stands:

  • Lionel Messi (Argentina): 33 matches
  • Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal): 28 matches
  • Lothar Matthäus (Germany): 25 matches
  • Miroslav Klose (Germany): 24 matches

Most matches as captain

Messi has also extended his lead as the player with the most matches as captain in World Cup history.

Having already broken the record in 2022, he has added further captaincies during the 2026 tournament, moving well clear of former leaders such as Diego Maradona and Philipp Lahm. He has now catpained his country to three World Cup finals - in 2014, 2022, and 2026. His leadership role has remained central as Argentina made another deep run.

All-time World Cup top scorer

One of the most significant milestones came in 2026, when Messi became the outright top scorer in World Cup history.

He entered the competition with 13 goals, behind Miroslav Klose’s record of 16. After a remarkable start to the tournament, including a hat trick against Algeria and further goals in the knockout rounds, Messi moved past Klose and established a new benchmark.

After the semifinal against England, Messi has 21 World Cup goals.

  • Lionel Messi (Argentina): 21 goals
  • Kylian Mbappé (France): 20 goals
  • Miroslav Klose (Germany): 16 goals
  • Gerd Müller (Germany): 14 goals
  • Just Fontaine (France): 13 goals

In doing so, he also extended his record as Argentina’s leading World Cup scorer, far ahead of names like Gabriel Batistuta and Maradona.

Most goal contributions in World Cup history

Messi has also set a new benchmark for total goal contributions (goals + assists) in World Cup history.

Having already overtaken Pelé in 2022, Messi has pushed his combined total to 33 contributions (21 goals, 12 assists) during the 2026 tournament. That figure puts him comfortably ahead of other modern stars, including Kylian Mbappé, who totals 25 after the 2026 tournament.

He is also the only player to register at least one assist in six different World Cups.

Most wins in World Cup history

Another major record to fall during the 2026 tournament was the number of World Cup match victories.

Before the tournament, the record belonged to Germany striker Miroslav Klose, who won 17 matches across his World Cup career. Messi surpassed that mark during Argentina’s 2026 campaign and has continued extending his lead. After Argentina’s semifinal victory over England, Messi has recorded 22 World Cup wins, the most in tournament history.

That total comes from Argentina’s success across six tournaments:

  • 2006: 2 wins
  • 2010: 1 win
  • 2014: 5 wins
  • 2018: 1 win
  • 2022: 7 wins
  • 2026: 6 wins so far

With the final against Spain still to come, Messi has the opportunity to extend that record even further.

Most minutes played in World Cup history

Messi has also extended his record for the most minutes played in FIFA World Cup history.

The Argentine originally broke Paolo Maldini’s long-standing record during the 2022 World Cup final against France. Maldini had held the record with 2,217 minutes played, but Messi’s run through Qatar pushed him beyond that mark, finishing the tournament with 2,314 minutes.

After appearing throughout Argentina’s run in 2026, including the semifinal victory over England, Messi has now reached 2,724 World Cup minutes, extending his advantage at the top of the list.

The all-time leaderboard:

  • Lionel Messi (Argentina): 2,724 minutes
  • Paolo Maldini (Italy): 2,217 minutes
  • Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal): 2,206 minutes
  • Manuel Neuer (Germany): 2,160 minutes
  • Lothar Matthäus (Germany): 2,045 minutes

The record is a reflection of both Messi’s longevity and Argentina’s consistency, with the forward now having played deep into four different World Cup knockout runs.

Most Player of the Match awards

Messi has further extended his record as the player with the most Player of the Match awards in World Cup history.

After earning multiple awards during Qatar 2022 and adding more during the 2026 tournament, Messi has reached 20 Player of the Match awards across his World Cup career.

That total is another example of his extraordinary consistency, with Messi having been recognized as Argentina’s standout performer across multiple generations of teammates and opponents.

Scoring records and unique milestones

The 2026 tournament has also seen Messi break or extend several unique scoring records:

  • He became the oldest player to score a World Cup hat-trick
  • He extended his record for scoring in consecutive World Cup matches
  • He increased his tally of goals scored from outside the box, setting a new all-time mark
  • He added to his record of scoring against the most different national teams in World Cup history

These achievements further demonstrate the breadth of his impact, from consistency to moments of individual brilliance.

Records Messi can still extend in the final

What makes Messi’s 2026 campaign remarkable is not just the number of records, but the fact that many of them are still being extended. With the 2026 World Cup final against Spain still ahead, Messi has already built a record collection unlike any player before him. A victory over Spain would add:

  • A second World Cup title
  • Another World Cup victory to his record total
  • More minutes played
  • Another appearance in a World Cup final

Regardless of the final result, Messi’s statistical impact on the tournament has already placed him alone at the top of several all-time categories. Whether through goals, appearances or leadership, his influence on the tournament’s history is now without precedent. And with every game, he is setting new standards that may stand for generations.
