Real Madrid election scheduled confirmed: date and time of the presidential vote
Real Madrid’s electoral committee has confirmed the schedule for the club’s presidential vote, which pits Enrique Riquelme against incumbent Florentino Pérez.
Real Madrid’s electoral committee has officially called elections to choose the club’s next president, with voting set for June 7. Two candidates - Florentino Pérez and Enrique Riquelme - will go head-to-head. Club members now hold the power at the ballot box to decide who will lead Los Blancos for the next four years, through 2030. Voting will take place at the basketball arena inside Real Madrid City in Valdebebas, running from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. local time (3:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. ET).
These will be the first presidential elections at Real Madrid since Ramón Calderón’s victory in 2006, which followed Pérez’s abrupt resignation during his first spell in charge.
The election date was set after the committee approved Enrique Riquelme’s candidacy last Sunday. The 37-year-old businessman from Alicante is the president and majority owner of Cox Energy Group. From that moment, electoral rules granted the committee a maximum of 15 days to call the vote - a process that has now been completed.
An intense campaign period begins immediately and will run up to election day. In truth, Pérez had already kicked things off last Saturday during a matchday at the Bernabéu, unveiling a massive banner featuring his image alongside the dates and venues of the seven European Cups won under his leadership. The slogan read: “Mucha historia por hacer” (“Much more history to be made”). Riquelme, for his part, has been visible at various public events in recent days. After formally presenting his candidacy in Valdebebas on Saturday, he attended this weekend’s game at the Bernabéu wearing a Dani Carvajal jersey and soaked in the crowd’s support. He later posted a childhood photo of himself on Instagram dressed in full Madrid kit, alongside his campaign slogan: “Legado y futuro” (“Legacy and future”).
The Mourinho factor
One immediate consequence of the election call is that, despite the current board remaining in a caretaker role until a new president is chosen, the signing and formal announcement of José Mourinho - reportedly agreed in principle by Pérez pending final signature - will, in theory, be delayed until after the vote. Both candidates now enter a window in which they can present their visions and projects to the voting membership.
Pérez has served as president in his second tenure since 2009 without facing an electoral challenge. No rival candidates emerged in 2009, 2013, 2017, 2021, or 2025. This time, however, he has opposition - something he said last week, during his press conference at Ciudad Real Madrid, that he had been hoping for. The last time Pérez faced a contested election was in 2004, when he renewed his mandate in overwhelming fashion. He secured 21,377 votes (91.36% of the electorate), compared to 1,189 (5.08%) for Lorenzo Sanz and 458 (1.96%) for Arturo Baldasano.
