Real Madrid eyes unexpected payday as rising prospect Obrador attracts major interest

Real Madrid’s long‑running strategy for moving academy players is paying off again — and this time, the windfall could be bigger than expected.

For years, the club has favored a specific formula: sell 50% of a young player’s rights, keep a buy‑back clause, or secure half of any future transfer fee if the player’s value skyrockets. That’s exactly the setup in place with left-back Rafa Obrador.

Obrador flourishing in Serie A

Last summer, Madrid sold half of Obrador’s rights to Benfica after completing the signing of Fran García. Obrador struggled to settle in Portugal, but everything changed when he was loaned to Torino in January. In Serie A, he finally broke through — so much so that his market value has nearly tripled, rising from about $2.2 million to roughly $6 million.

According to Corriere dello Sport, AS Roma, set to return to the Champions League next season, has Obrador on its shortlist to strengthen the left side of its defense. If Roma decides to make a move, it would first need to strike a deal with Benfica. After that, Real Madrid would have to sign off and choose not to activate its buy‑back clause.

Should a transfer go through, Madrid would automatically receive 50% of the final fee — a welcome boost as Florentino Pérez prepares for a summer of heavy spending. With major signings on the horizon, any extra income helps fuel the club’s financial firepower.

In short, Madrid is quietly thrilled. Obrador’s breakout season could turn into a surprise cash injection just when the club needs it most.
