Real Madrid suffered a home defeat to Getafe CF and now stand on the brink of elimination from the La Liga title race. There is still time to respond, but the atmosphere at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium felt decisive, almost final. One of the first waves of boos came during Real Madrid’s initial round of substitutions, when Thiago Pitarch was taken off. The Bernabéu crowd disagreed with the decision, believing the academy graduate, making his first start, had been performing well and that others should have made way instead.
Huijsen was also jeered after misplacing a pass into an area with no teammates nearby. The centre back has been whistled at on several occasions this season and his relationship with the Bernabéu faithful appears strained. That tension surfaced again here.
After the final whistle, with the defeat confirmed, a thunderous chorus of boos echoed around the stadium, directed at everyone: Arbeloa, the players and the board. Shouts of “Florentino, resign!” could be heard from the stands. The uproar encapsulated the anger among Real Madrid supporters in yet another season that has failed to meet expectations.
