Real Madrid gesture repays that of Liverpool at Anfield
At the conclusion of the match at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, there was a nice touch from the hosts.
Real Madrid reciprocated the gesture shown by Liverpool in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16. The Reds had placed a bouquet of flowers in the area where Madrid fans were seated in tribute to Amancio Amaro, and so at the end of the return leg at the Santiago Bernabéu, the famous club song ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ was pumped out over the public address system.
Respect from Real Madrid and Liverpool
After securing their safe passage to the quarterfinals with another Champions League triumph, the Real Madrid players left the pitch while the fans, both sets, continued to sing the iconic anthem. The Liverpool players remained and applauded the section at the top of the north end of the stadium.
“Liverpool gave us a lovely touch at Anfield. Our honorary president had passed away and they made a great gesture. It’s the least we could do. Clubs at this level demonstrate their greatness with these things,” legendary player Emilio Butragueño, who is now the director of Institutional Relations for Los Blancos, explained.
The 2,000 or so Liverpool supporters who came to the Bernabéu did not cause any incidents before the game and shared moments of affection with Real Madrid fans. They expressed their gratitude to their hosts for the gesture by chanting ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ with outstretched scarves.
