Real Madrid fired two goals past a Lampard-led, lacklustre Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in what never felt like a fairytale story for the English side that huffed and puffed but could not blow down the white wall. Carlo Ancelotti’s side landed two fatal hits on Chelsea as they made their way to their 11th Champions League semi-final in 13 years.

After the game, Madrid’s metronomic midfielder, Toni Kroos, who has been at the centre of a whirlwind of speculation about his deal that ends in June 2023, left a huge hint about where he sees himself playing football next year. Retirement from the national team came a few years ago for the World Cup winner, but it appears that his club future is slowly creeping towards a long-awaited resolution.

‘Everything is going the right way’

Speaking to Amazon Prime, the German television rights holders for Champions League football, Toni Kroos was asked about his future and whether he sees himself playing for Real Madrid next season. “Yes, everything is going the right way”, said the midfielder, who until now had been coy on his future with the Spanish club.

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti had also hinted about progress regarding the futures of both Toni Kroos and his midfield partner Luka Modric, who also looks more likely than not to sign an extension (although nothing is confirmed), despite concrete interest from abroad, including Asia. Karim Benzema is also set to sign for another year at the club.

11 semi-finals in 13 years

Real Madrid achieved an historic record by reaching their 11th Champions League semi-final in 13 seasons. Frank Lampard, Chelsea’s coach, also reached a record with his club in the match, becoming the only manager to lose his first four games in charge of Chelsea in their 118-year-long history.
